ATHENS, GA (3/9/04) -- Saint Joseph's evened its record at 3-3 with a sweep on the first day of the Classic City Shootout hosted by the University of Georiga. SJU defeated Western Illinois, 4-2, in game one and blanked Alabama State, 10-0, in the nightcap.
Western Illinois got on the board first off starter
Dana Travis with a two-run homerun from Brooke Benson in the bottom of the first. That was all the offense that the Fighting Leathernecks could muster off Travis, who allowed just one hit the rest of the way to pick up her second win of the season. She struck out seven in the complete game victory.
SJU got one run in the fourth as junior
Alicia Cunic doubled to start the inning and sophomore
Jill Clementi (three hits) singled, giving the Hawks first and second and nobody out. After a pop-up, junior
Robin Berry singled to load the bases. Travis walked a run in to bring St. Joe's within one at 2-1.
Senior
Lindsey McNamara ripped a two-run homerun in the fifth to score junior
Megan Richardson, who had singled to start the inning. The blast proved to be the game-winner. SJU added an insurance run in the 7th on a Berry sacrifice fly.
The Hawks exploded for a seven-spot in the fourth in a 10-0 mercy rule victory over Alabama State. Freshman
Lauren Hughes tossed five shutout innings, allowing just three hits, and striking out seven to earn her first collegiate win.
Cunic had a three-run homerun and McNamara went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Richardson was 3-for-4 for SJU.
Saint Joseph's takes on tournament host Georgia, who is ranked eighth in the latest NFCA poll. That game begins at noon, with the championship beginning at 2 p.m. Live stats are available on the softball page at
