TEMPLE STEALS ONE FROM SJU, 2-1, IN A-10 SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

AMHERST, MA (05/08/03)- Temple pinch-runner Nicole Undercoffler stole third and then cam around to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an errand throw by Saint Joseph's catcher Alicia Cunic as the Owls topped the Hawks, 2-1, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament held at the UMass Softball Complex. SJU, 24-14, took an early 1-0 lead as Cunic drove in her team-leading 29th run with a third inning single, scoring Megan Richardson. The Hawk centerfielder readched on an error by Temple third baseman Lauren Evans, the stole second, her team-high seventh theft of the season. After Lindsey McNamara walked, Cunic delivered a two-out single to center, scoring the run. Temple tied it in the bottom of the inning as Bari Lynn Pflueger, an all-conference selection at designated player, singled home Katie Weigle, who reached on an error by first baseman Desiree McGhie. Junior Dana Travis (11-7) was stellar on the mound for SJU. The Hawk hurler allowed six hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Her second inning strikeout of all-conference catcher Alexis Gary established a new school record for career strikeouts. Travis passed Christina Kowalski (372, 1997-2000, and now has 376 strikeouts in her fabulous career. Freshman Vicky Grasham (9-5) picked up the win for Temple in relief. Grasham pitched three scoreless inning, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Liz Naughton started the game for Temple and allowed four hits and one unearned run. UMass came from behind to defeat Fordham, 3-1, in the other game of the day. So the Hawks will face the Rams in the consolation bracket at 2:00 p.m. That game will be broadcast live over the internet.
