SJU SWEEPS LA SALLE, 4-3, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA (5/5/01) - Playing in its final homestand at La Salle, the St. Joseph's softball team looked more than comfortable on the Explorers diamond. The Hawks went extra innings in both games, winning both and clinching third place in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The two teams will play in their final regular season game of the season on Sunday at noon. It will be Senior Day for the Hawks with seniors Heather Chapman, Kristin Doris, Jess Ryan and Michele Wolfe all taking the field for the final time. In the opener, La Salle opened the game with a run in the top of the first only to have SJU answer with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Teresa Andreani singled to left and Lindsey McNamara doubled her home for the first run. Missy Rhoades then belted her third homer of the season over the left field fence to make it 3-1. La Salle got an unearned run in the fourth and then a homer off the bat of Alexis Schneider in the fifth to tie the game. That would be all the scoring until the 11th inning. Senior Heather Chapman started the bottom of the 11th with a double down the right field line. Kristin Nau, SJU's alltime leader in sacrifice hits, advanced Chapman to third with a nice bunt. Then Andreani brought her in with a sacrifice fly to center for the game-winner. Freshman Dana Travis (12-7) relieved starter Brandie Adams in the eighth and pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win. Ali Wood (4-18), who allowed just that Chapman double following the first inning, took the loss for the Explorers. Travis (13-7) and Missy Rorke (4-19) were locked in a pitchers dual for eight innings in game two until Adams singled home Andreani with the only run in the 1-0 SJU win. McNamara, who went 3-for-3 in the game, singled following Andreani's leadoff walk in the eighth. Rhoades sacrificed them to second and third with Adams ending the contest. Travis allowed just five hits and was aided by Chapman on the defensive side. The Hawk centerfielder threw out Rorke at the plate in the third inning to end that frame, and the Explorers lone threat of the game. SJU (21-21-1, 12-8 in A-10 play) has now won seven of its last eight games. The Hawks have wrapped up the third seed in the Verizon A-10 Softball Championships which will be held at Dayton next week (5/10-12). La Salle falls to 8-38, 4-16.
