HAWKS SWEEP DAYTON IN A-10 SOFTBALL ACTION

BOXSCORE GAME 2 EAST NORRITON, PA (4/23/04) - Junior Jill Clementi singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give SJU a 3-2 win in the opener and freshman Lauren Hughes struck out eight batters in a 5-1 victory in the nightcap that ensured a sweep of Atlantic 10 rival Dayton. Junior Cara Deldeo went 3-for-3 with a homerun to spark the Hawks in game two. After honoring seniors Dana Travis and Lindsey McNamara in pregame ceremonies, SJU got off to a rough start in the top of the first. Three of Dayton's first four batters reached base, two via bases on balls and the third on a bunt single. But with the bases loaded and one out, Travis buckled down to enduce a pop-up and groundout to escape with no damage. The Hawks (15-21, 6-2 A-10) got on the board with single runs in the second and third innings. With two outs in the second, junior Robin Berry singled, stole second, and was driven in on a freshman Rachel Pawlikowski single. SJU used the same formula in the third as junior Megan Richardson singled, stole second and was driven home on a junior Alicia Cunic single. Dayton (11-30, 2-8) tied the score in the fifth when Shannon St. Clair launched a two-run homer down the left field. The Flyers looked primed to take their first lead of the game in the next inning, but SJU avoided trouble. UD started the inning with two singles and walk that loaded the bases with no outs. But Travis fielded consecutive comebackers to get the force at home and got a groundball to first to end the threat. McNamara singled with one out and Cunic followed with a double to put Hawks at second and third with one out. Clementi then singled to right field to drive in McNamara for the game winner. Travis earned the win to improve to 10-8 on the season. Three SJU batters had a pair of hits, including Cunic, Berry and Pawlikowski. Dayton's Melissa Myher was saddled with the defeat. The Crimson and Gray loaded the bases to open up game one but only plated a single run on a Cunic sacrific fly. The Flyers tied the score in the third as a two-out Tiff Ward single scored Cassie Gross, who had doubled a batter before. It looked as if the two teams were headed to another extra inning affair before Deldeo homered in the fifth and SJU tallied two more runs in the sixth to account for the 5-1 final. Hughes scattered six hits and allowed only a single unearned run to improve to 4-8. With the win, Saint Joseph's remained in solid position to qualify for the A-10 Championships, held May 13-15 at the University of Dayton. The Hawks host Princeton in their final home game of the season on Tuesday, April 27, at 3 p.m.
