PHILADELPHIA (03/26/03) - Temple scored six runs in the first two innings and thwarted a Saint Joseph's comeback in taking a 6-5 decision in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both team at Erny Field on a cold and rainy Wednesday afternoon. It is set to be made up on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. but the time may be pushed back depending on field preparations. The Owls jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one, scoring two in the first inning off SJU starter Dana Travis. Firstbaseman Chrissy Harris delivered the big blow, a two-run single plating Katie Weigle and Jenny Cochran. An RBI double by Hawk second baseman Robin Berry and an RBI single by leftfielder Gale Treskot knotted the game in the top of the second at 2-2. The Owls, however, responded for four runs in the bottom of the frame, three of which were unearned. With the bases loaded and two out Bari Lynn Pflueger singled to drive in Aida Esquer. Owls catcher Alexis Gary then topped one right in front of the plate that SJU catcher Alicia Cunic fielded cleanly but her throw hit Gary in the back which enabled two Owl rusn to cross the plate. Harris then singled home Pflueger to make the score 6-2. SJU then scored two runs in the fifth inning with Cunic doubling home Megan Richardson and third baseman Jill Clementi singling Cunic home. Kim Watkins then relieved starter Vicky Grasham (4-5) and retired Robin Berry to end the inning. The Hawks threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases on singles by Cara Deldeo and Richardson and a walk to Lindsey McNamara. But with two out, Cunic, who entered the game with a team-leading .450 batting average, flew out to center to end the inning. SJU's first two hitters in the seventh, Clementi and Desiree McGhie, singled to start off the inning. Berry then reached base via an error by Cochran at second base, scoring Clementi with the Hawks' fifth run. Liz Naughton then relieved Watkins and allowed just an infield single to Travis to load the bases before picking up her first save of the season. Travis, who fell to 3-3 on the season, settled down after the second inning and retired the last 13 Owls in order. She also struck out nine in the game. In the second game, Temple score solo runs in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Then, after Deldeo (error), McNamara (single)and McGhie (walk) reached base for the Hawks in the third, Clementi doubled to deep center with two outs to clear the bases, giving the Hawks a 3-2 lead. The contest was suspended after Berry grounded out to end the third for SJU. Naughton started the contest for Temple while Brandie Adams, 3-0 on the season, was on the mound for the Hawks. The game is scheduled to be picked up in the bottom of the third inning at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Temple's Erny Field. The time may be pushed back depending on the condition of the field.
