EAST NORRITON, PA (04/16/03) - Senior Gale Treskot drove in the winning run in both ends of a doubleheader to power Saint Joseph's to a sweep of visiting Drexel at East Norriton Field, 1-0 and 3-2. Treskot, who is finishing her fine Hawk career in tremendous fashion, belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning, her first dinger since her freshman season. In the opener, it was her two-out RBI double to right center in the bottom of the fifth inning that accounted for the game's lone run.
Junior Dana Travis tossed her third shutout of the season and 15th of her career to lead SJU on the mound in game one. The Newark, Del native allowed just three hits and one walk in the contest while striking out 10 Dragons. During one stretch, Travis retired 12 straight Dragons before third baseman Kristy Pron hit a win-aided double to right with two outs in the sixth. Travis then struck out Jonnae McClain to end the inning.
Drexel first baseman Rachel Levinson led off the seventh with a double to right, but Travis closed strong striking out three straight to end the contest. She upped her record to 7-3 on the season while lowering her ERA to 1.85. Her 15th shutout moves her into sole possession of third place on the SJU all-time list.
Liza Fuller (6-10) was equally as impressive on the mound for Drexel. The sophomore hurler struckout six while allowing only four hits, two coming in the fateful fifth. Sophomore Robin Berry double to center field with two outs and then Treskot followed with her game-winning hit.
In the nightcap, senior Brandie Adams allowed two unearned runs in the first inning, but then settled in to pick up her sixth win against just one loss. She allowed just two hits in the contest, while striking out three.
Adams hit shortstop Debbie Botke to lead off the first inning, one of three hit batsmen in the game for the veteran hurler. Lauren Greenberg then sacrificed her to second base. Pron then reached first on a throwing error by Adams, who tried to get Botke at third on a comebacker to the mound. After Pron advanced to second on a passed ball, McClain grounded out to Adams to drive in Botke with Drexel's first run of the day. Levinson then singled through the left side of the infield to drive home Pron for a 2-0 Dragon lead.
The lead was short-lived, however. Senior Desiree McGhie led off the bottom of the second with a triple to right center. After Jill Clementi grounded out, Berry singled to left to drive in McGhie with SJU's first run. Then Treskot, who hit four homers as a freshman, drove one over the centerfield fence to give the Hawks the lead.
That would be all the scoring in the game for either team, although SJU would threaten three more times, leaving a total of nine runners on base. Fuller, who was so brilliant in game one, came in relief of starter Amanda Heyser (1-5) in the fourth inning with the bases loaded with one out to get out of a jam. She allowed just two hits in her two-and-two-thirds innings of work.
Besides Treskot and Berry, sophomore shortstop Cara Deldeo also had three hits on the day to tale over the team lead in hitting with a .353 batting average.
Saint Joseph's, which has now won eight straight, ups its record to 16-7 on the season heading into an important Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader at Fordham on Saturday. Drexel falls to 9-20 on the season.
