ATHENS, GA (3/10/04) -- The No. 6-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (21-4) captured the Classic City Shootout championship on Wednesday with 11-0 and 15-1 wins against Saint Joseph's (3-5). In game one, Georgia's Michelle Green threw her second perfect game of the season, recording 15 strikeouts in five innings.
The perfect game was Green's second of the season and her eighth career no-hitter. Green (11-1) finished the tournament with 11 scoreless innings, extending her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 39. Her 15 strikeouts against the Hawks was her eighth double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
Despite the lopsided scores, Saint Joseph's stayed in game one early thanks to the pitching prowess of senior
Dana Travis. After four full innings, Travis held the potent Bulldog offense to just two runs. Unfortunatley for SJU, that offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to produce the 11-0 result. The game was stopped with one out in the fifth due to the mercy rule.
The Hawks managed three hits in game two and took an early 1-0 lead in the first. After back-to-back singles from juniors
Cara Deldeo and
Megan Richardson, sophomore
Jill Clementi roped a RBI single to plate Deldeo. The Bulldogs' Katie Griffin didn't allow a hit for the rest of the contest. Georgia scored six runs in the second, one in the third and eight in the fourth to win the Classic City Shootout going away 15-1. Freshman
Lauren Hughes took the loss for SJU.
St. Joe's continues its demanding Spring Break schedule with Thursday's doubleheader at #24 Georgia Tech.
