HAWKS SWEEP EXPLORERS TO MOVE A GAME ABOVE .500 IN A-10 PLAY

PHILADELPHIA (04/27/02) - Saint Joseph's used a 10-run seventh inning to blow away host La Salle, 12-1, in the first game of a twinbill Saturday afternoon on Good Shepherd Field and then rode the arm of sophomore pitcher Dana Travis in a 5-1 win in the nightcap to sweep the Explorers. The wins moved SJU above .500 in Atlantic 10 Conference play at 9-8, and to 28-13 overall. In the opener, junior Brandie Adams and La Salle sophomore Ali Wood were locked in an intense duel through the first six innings. Wood, the reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week, had allowed the Hawks just two runs on seven hits through the first six innings.Adams, who upped her record to 12-4 on the season, was even more dominant, allowing just five hits for the game, and one earned run. SJU jumped on the board first as the team's hottest hitter of late, senior left fielder Megan Brown, doubled in Lindsey McNamara, who had led off the frame with a single. The game remained scoreless until the sixth where SJU picked up an insurance run as Brown again delivered a big blow, this time an RBI-single to right to score Missy Rhoades. After La Salle got on the board via an RBI double in the sixth by Jillian Stombock, the floodgates opened in the seventh. The Hawks unloaded for 10 runs in the frame, with the big blow being delivered by freshman right fielder Cara Deldeo, a three-run homer to left. It was the Hawk rookie's first roundtripper, coming in her first game back in the lineup after being hit in the elbow by a pitch in the first game of a doubleheader at Villanova. Fellow freshman Megan Richardson, who leads SJU with a .364 batting average, had two hits in the inning, scoring two runs and driving in one. Senior Kristin Nau also had a double, and scored twice. In the second game, Travis picked up her team-high 15th win, allowing just four hits and one unearned run while striking out eight. Her 15 wins ties for fourth on the SJU all-time season list, while her record strikeout total is now at 153. The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Teresa Andreani, which scored Deldeo. SJU tacked on two more in the third as Deldeo doubled to put runners at second and third (Richardson-walk) with one out. Nau singled Richardson home, putting runners at the corners. After Andreani lined out, the Hawks put runners in motion, with Deldeo scoring and Nau getting tagged out in a rundown. La Salle, 11-33, 2-15, picked up an unearned run in the fourth, but SJU answered with two more runs in the sixth. Nau doubled and scored on an RBI single by McNamara. Rhoades then hit her ninth career triple to move into a tie with Trish Treskot ('97), Gale's sister, for fifth place on the all-time list. McNamara, who was 5-of-8 on the day, scored on the play to make it 5-1. The two teams will look to conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
