With 19 letterwinners returning, including nine
All-Conference performers, the St. Joseph's
men's track team expected nothing but the best
during the 2000-01 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Keyed by the core of its A-10 Champion Cross
Country team, the majority of the team's
all-conference performers in the winter and
spring resided in the middle distances. The
veteran field was led by senior
Karl Savage, and
assisted by
Ben Koch, Mike McCabe, Marc
Rosetti,
Jeff Storch, and
Jim Smith. Junior
James Scott also provided the squad with a
formidible competitor in the sprints.
The Hawk men captured second place at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track
and Field Championships in February. The Hawks placed in the top
three in 14 of the 17 events in which they competed. Six different
runners captured gold for SJU, including two wins each for Savage (mile
and 3000m) and Scott (55m and 200m). In addition, freshman Andy
Craycraft, who won the 800m and also anchored the 4x800m relay, was
chosen as the most outstanding rookie performer at the meet.
SJU capped the indoor season in Boston at the IC4A championships.
Scott again led the troops by taking sixth in the 200 meter dash. He
was the top finisher at the IC4A meet, as the team placed 22nd out of
49 teams.
At the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship, Scott was named the Most
Outstanding Track Performer, taking gold in both the 100 and 200 meter
dashes and helping the team to a third place finish Supporting Scott,
Savage set a new meet record in the 1,500 meter run, taking first place.
Junior
Marc Maccario and freshman
Nick Carras also showed well, with
Maccario taking second in the 400 meter and sixth in the 200 meter,
while Carras ran to a fourth place in the 100 meter.
At the Penn Relays, one of the biggest meets of the season, Koch
emerged as SJU's top performer. The junior took third in the 3,000 meter
steeplechase. Additionally, the 4x200 relay team of Maccario, Scott,
McCabe, and freshman
Kile Garguilo, took fifth place in the IC4A relay
championship. The distance medley relay team of Maccario, Rosetti,
Craycraft , and Savage placed eighth in the Championship of America.
Like the winter, the spring wrapped up at the IC4A meet. The 4x800
relay team of
Geoff Valentine, Smith, Craycraft and B. Rosetti placed
second for the Hawks, while savage finished sixth in the 1500m.
Overall the indoor and outdoor seasons witnessed eleven different
Hawks earn All-Conference recognition. In addition, Koch epitomized the
term student-athlete, earning Academic All-Conference honors in both
seasons. For their consistency all season, Scott and Savage shared the
team's MVP award.
