HAWK SOFTBALL RALLIES FOR SPLIT AT RIDER

BOXSCORE GAME 2 LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ (4/6/04) -- The Hawks (9-15) were held to five hits in in dropping the opener but rallied in the nightcap to earn a split at the defending MAAC champion Rider (18-8) Broncs. After committing four errors and dropping game one 7-0, SJU responded to snap a seven-game RU winning streak with an 8-0 shutout victory. In the first game, Rider sophomore Heather Beintema struck out 14 batters for her sixth shutout of the season. Beintema has not allowed an earned run in her last 38 innings pitched. The Broncs plated four in the second innings off SJU junior Cara Deldeo. A single and two walks loaded the bases to start the inning and the hosts capitalized by plating four runs. While Beintema continued to set down St. Joe's, Rider tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Despite recording the first two outs of the inning, a costly Hawk error opened the door for RU to add three unearned insurance runs. Junior Robin Berry had two of SJU's five hits. Deldeo took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season, despite only allowing three earned runs. Senior Dana Travis twirled two innings of shutout relief. Travis was masterful in the second game, tossing a complete game two-hitter for her third shutout of the season. Saint Joseph's took advantage of two errors in the second inning, plating five runs in the second on just one hit. Sophomore Katie McCann had a big two-run single in the frame. The Hawks tacked on single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to account for the 8-0 final. Junior Alicia Cunic returned to the lineup by smacking her third home run of the season in the fifth. She finished 2-for-4 on the day and knocked in two runs. SJU remains on the road to face ACC-foe Maryland on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
