ORLANDO, FL (03/05/01) - Even though the
two schools are located only 15 miles from one
another, Villanova and St. Joseph's traveled
nearly 1,000 miles to do battle over Spring
Break at The Rebel Games held in Orlando,
Florida. The two teams battled in a 10-inning
early season thriller that saw Villanova's Kristen
Romano single in Jackie Pasquerella in the
tenth inning to secure the 2-1 victory for the
Wildcats.
In an extremely defensive battle, no pitcher allowed a run in the game's
initial seven innings. Using the international tiebreaker rule both teams
were given opportunities to score with a runner on second. Both teams
failed to get a run across the plate in the first two extra innings. In the
ninth inning, SJU tallied first to take a 1-0 advantage. Junior Teresa
Andreani smacked a double, scoring
Kristin Nau who was on second
due to the tiebreaker rule. Villanova responded in the bottom of the ninth
to tie the game and send it into the fourth extra inning. After the Hawks
were shut down in the top of the tenth, Pasquerella was placed on
second for Villanova. Romano stepped to the plate and came through
with a clutch hit to plate Pasquerella and give the Hawks their first loss
of the season.
Sophomore Brandi Adams took the loss for the Hawks. Adams struck
out three while allowing only four hits. Andreani finished 2-4 with one
RBI.
The second game of the Hawks twinbill saw the debut of freshman
hurler,
Dana Travis. Bethune-Cookman proved to be too much for the
rookie, as the Hawks were shutout, 6-0. Travis scattered seven hits with
five strikeouts and three walks.
Kristin Nau was the bright spot for SJU, posting two singles in the
contest while freshman
Lindsey McNamara collected her first career hit
for SJU.
The Hawks (0-2) take on Yale and Providence in a double header on
Tuesday, March 6.
