DAYTON, OH (4/29/01) - Not much separated
the St. Joseph's Hawks and Dayton Flyers on
the softball diamond during this critical Atlantic
10 softball weekend. The two teams entered the
series tied for third place in the A-10 standings
with Rhode Island, and after two games on Saturday (a doubleheader
split) and six innings on Sunday, the teams were still knotted.
But after a Heather Chapman RBI single in the top of the seventh, and a
Lindsey McNamara diving catch of a line drive heading up the middle for
the final out of the game, the Hawks took home a 3-2 win and the
all-important series.
"It was a total team victory," stated Chapman on the win. "We had great
pitching, solid defense and timely hitting. Everyone contributed."
Chapman, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a run scored and the
game-winning RBI, led off the top of the first with a single to right.
Teresa Andreani then doubled down the right field line, putting runners at
second and third with one out. After Lindsey McNamara popped out to
second,
Missy Rhoades hit a similar pop which was dropped by the
Flyer second base Maegan Swisher allowing both Chapman and
Andreani to score. Both Andreani and Rhoades were injured in collisions
at home and second on the play, but the two were able to remain in the
contest.
Brandie Adams (6-11) held the Dayton bats in check through the first
three innings before Erin O'Shea smacked a two-out double to center for
UD's first hit in the bottom of the fourth to drive home Megan Dunton.
The Flyers tied the game at 2-2 two innings later when Adams threw in
the dirt to Rhoades at first allowing Erin Weidemann, who led off the
sixth with a double to left, to score.
Megan Brown started the Hawks seventh off with a single to third and
advanced to second on a throwing error by Wiedemann. Sandra Carroll,
making her first start in over three weeks since injuring her knee,
dropped down a nice sacrifice bunt to move Brown to third. Chapman
then ripped a 2-2 pitch to center for the game-winning RBI.
Designated player Tracie Weinheimer led things off for Dayton with a
single to left in the bottom of the seventh.
Dana Travis, the winning
pitcher in game two on Saturday, then relieved Adams. She proceeded
to walk pinch hitter Dana Campbell. Swisher then moved the runners to
second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Travis got catcher Angie Barney
to ground to shortstop
Kristin Nau for the second out setting up
McNamara's incredible diving catch of Wiedemann's liner up the middle
for the final out.
SJU, 19-20-1, 10-8 in A-10 play, now hosts La Salle on May 5 & 6 for its
final A-10 series. The Hawks are tied with Rhode Island for third while
Dayton, 19-28, 9-9, is a game behind in fifth place. The top four teams
advance to the Verizon A-10 Softball Championships to be held at
Dayton, May 10-12.
