HAWK WOMEN BATTER BONNIES IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE, 66-32

PHILADELPHIA (3/02/03) - Stifling defense by the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (18-9, 13-3 A-10) limited St. Bonaventure (6-21, 3-13 A-10) to just 28.3% shooting for the game, 16.0% in the second half , as the Hawks wrapped up the regular season and saluted their senior class with a 66-32 victory at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Seniors Colleen McGahan, Natasha Pronga, Takeya Trayer and Terraya Richardson were recognized in pregame ceremonies. SJU mixed its starting lineup for the first time in six weeks, as head coach Cindy Griffin gave McGahan, Pronga and Trayer starts alongside juniors Irina Krasnoshiok and Stephanie Graff. St. Bona took advantage of the unfamiliar lineup, bolting out to a 10-2 lead to start the game. Griffin called a timeout at the 14:23 mark to regroup the troops. The Crimson and Gray came out of the timout and never looked back. Junior Erin Brady ignited a furious Hawk surge, as SJU blitzed the Bonnies, 28-8, over the remaining 14 minutes. Brady tallied 13 points to fuel the St. Joe's attack and SJU went into the lockerroom at intermission with a 12-point advantage, 30-18. A 15-4 run by the Hawks to open the second half swelled the lead to 25 at 45-20 and slammed the door on any Bonnie notions of a comeback. "Our defense became our offense and then we started to click a little bit," related Griffin. "We pretty much stayed in rhthym the whole second half." The SJU advantage would extend into the 30s before Griffin cleared the bench down the stretch. Junior Esther Hoffer and freshman Christen Scanlon both saw their first action of the season in the waning minutes. Sophomore Kristin Cuff tallied four points late and Hoffer put an exclamation point on the game by canning a three-pointer from the corner as time expired to close out the scoring at 66-32. Brady led all scorers with 22 points and Krasnoshiok notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. No St. Bonaventure player tallied more than six points. SJU shot 51.9% from the field, while holding SBU to 28.3%. The 2002-03 season was the 30th in the storied history of SJU women's basketball. AT halftime, the Hawks's paraded out numerous former student-athletes in recognition of 30 years of women's athletics on Hawk Hill. The Hawks will travel to Kingston, Rhode Island thiss week for the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship to be pllayed at the Ryan Center. SJU, which earned a first round bye at the A-10 Eastern Division Champion, will face the winner of the Dayton-Rhode Island opening round game in the quarterfinals on Fridat at 4:00 PM.
