TRAVIS EXTENDS SCORELESS STREAK AS HAWKS SPLIT WITH NOVA

BOXSCORE GAME 2 VILLANOVA, PA (5/10/04) --Senior Dana Travis extended her scoreless streak to 25 innings with her third straight shutout and junior Alicia Cunic blasted her sixth homerun as Saint Joseph's (19-27) won 2-0 over Villanova (31-24) in non-conference softball action. The shutout was the 25th of Travis' illustrious career, tying her with Christina Kowalksi for the all-time lead on Hawk Hill. The Wildcats took game two, 5-2 to salvage the split. Cunic blasted an offering from former ASA teammate Shannon Williams off the scoreboard in leftfield to put SJU ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Freshman Rachel Pawlikowski reached base on an error and was driven in by junior Lynn Ann Ravert to give the Hawks with what would prove to be an insurmountable 2-0 advantage. It was all the offense that Travis would need to improve to 14-10 on the season. She scattered seven hits and struck out four for her third straight complete game shutout. Travis has not allowed a run since the second inning in game one of a doubleheader with La Salle on May 1. Sophomore Jill Clementi had two singles for SJU. Williams took the loss, despite allowing only one earned run and four hits. The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap, scoring two unearned runs off VU starter Kristin Haynes. Junior Cara Deldeo started the game by singling and stealing second. After two outs, Cunic (intentional) and Clementi walked to load the bases for junior Robin Berry. She grounded to the shortstop who bobbled the ball, allowing Deldeo to score. Pawlikowski was then hit by a pitch to drive in Cunic. Villanova rallied back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs off freshman Lauren Hughes. Two RBI-singles and a wild pitch accounted for all the VU offense in the frame. Haynes and Hughes would find their rhythm, tossing four scoreless innings each. The Wildcats added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as a two-out, two-run single from Robin Flier gave VU a 5-2 lead. Haynes earned the win by tossing a complete game two-hitter and allowing no earned-runs. Hughes suffered the loss by allowing five earned runs in six innings pitched. The doubleheader wrapped up the regular season for SJU, who takes on Temple on Thursday in the Atlantic 10 Championships at Massachusetts. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and SJSN will bring you all the action live via streaming audio on sjuhawks.com.
