KINGSTON, RI (2/20/04) - - The Saint Joseph's University men's and women's indoor track & field teams will look to knock La Salle and Richmond off their respective perch on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the 2004 Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House.
Richmond's women's team won its first-ever Atlantic 10 title last season after edging Rhode Island by two points, 134.5-132.5, to halt the Rams' streak of three consecutive A-10 crowns. Saint Joseph's sophomore Thuy Nguyen, who garnered Most Outstanding Rookie honors of the 2003 Championship, looks to defend her 500m dash crown, while Richmond senior Julee Wilson seeks to duplicate her gold-medal performances in the 400m dash and long jump a year ago.
La Salle's men's squad won its second-ever Atlantic 10 title and first since 1996 last season, outdistancing second place Rhode Island, 205.5-190.5. The Explorers are led by sophomore James Jefferson, who took home Most Outstanding Track and Rookie honors last year after winning the 55m and 200m dashes. Massachusetts senior Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng will try and regain his 55m dash crown after tying a Conference record with a time of 6.30 at the 2002 Championship.
