TIGERS TOO MUCH FOR HAWKS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

BOXSCORE GAME 2 EAST NORRITON, PA (4/27/04) - A stiff wind blowing out to right field led to a high scoring affair in the opener and a pitcher's dual ensued in the nightcap as Princeton swept Saint Joseph's in non-conference play at East Norriton Field. SJU (15-23) rallied back from a 5-0 deficit but dropped an 8-7 game one decision. In game two, the Hawks managed only three hits, spoiling another strong effort from freshman Lauren Hughes in the circle and losing 2-0. The Tigers (22-19) pounced on the hosts early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the third. Kristin Del Calvo socked two-run homers in both the first and the third to lead the Princeton charge. The Hawks clawed back, however, scoring five runs with two outs the bottom of the third to knot the score at five. Junior Cara Deldeo sandwiched a single in between a groundout and a flyout to give SJU a runner on first with two away. Senior Lindsey McNamara had the first of three hits on the day and junior Alicia Cunic followed with an RBI-single to plate Deldeo. After consecutive walks to sophomore Jill Clementi and junior Robin Berry forced in McNamara and loaded the bases, freshman Rachel Pawlikowski delivered the big blow with a three-run double to center to tie the score at 5-5. Princeton rallied back to tally two in the top of the fourth as Lindsay Motel, batting .133 coming into the game, blasted a two-run home run to give the visitors a 7-5 lead. As it did just an inning before, St. Joe's battled back to tie the score. After sophomore Katie McCann was hit by a pitch, Deldeo doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. After a pop-out, McNamara singled home two runs to even the score at seven. Erin Snyder sent one deep in the top of the fifth for her second homer of the season. The blast proved to be the game-winner. Melissa Finley earned the win in relief of starter Calli Jo Varner, pitching four innings of two-hit, shutout ball. Senior Dana Travis suffered the loss for SJU. McNamara finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Deldeo added two hits. The seven SJU runs were the most scored in a loss since a 13-7 defeat to Villanova on April 22, 1999. The nightcap was a complete opposite of the opener, as Princeton's Amelia Runyan and Hughes engaged in a pitcher's dual. The visitor scored in the third inning as a Del Calvo double plated Wendy Bingham, who had singled. It was the only run Hughes would allow before being knocked out in the sixth as a Del Calvo line drive struck the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on the right elbow. Travis replaced Hughes and allowed a Motal home run in the seventh to put Princeton ahead 2-0. Runyan held SJU in check, allowing only a leadoff single to Deldeo before Berry singled in the fourth. She earned the win after spreading three-hits in the complete game shutout. Hughes takes another tough-luck loss despite allowing one earned run in five plus inning to drop to 4-9. In her nine losses, Saint Joseph's has scored a total of six runs. The Hawks return to the diamond tomorrow with a doubleheader at Lehigh.
