KINGSTON, RI (05/05/02) - Junior tri-captain
Desiree McGhie blasted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to lead Saint Joseph's to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over host Rhode Island and third place in the Atlantic 10 Conference final regular season standings. The Hawks (32-15, 12-9 in the A-10) will take on Temple, the number two seed, in the Verzion Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament next Thursday at 2:00 p.m. on URI's Bill Beck Field. The Rams (26-27, 12-9), which fell to fourth place, will take on top-seed UMass, which just completed its second straight perfect A-10 regular season (21-0).
three-game series between the Hawks and Rams was expected to be a pitcher's duel between Saint Joseph's sophomore hurler
Dana Travis and Rhode Island senior Gwen Rack. Both had pitched 2-0 shutouts the previous day, and were one-two in the A-10 in strikeouts, with Rack leading 275-166.
SJU, which got just one hit off Rack on Saturday, picked up two in the first inning as freshman
Cara Deldeo and senior
Teresa Andreani both singled. Andreani, who finished with a team-leading .365 batting average in A-10 play, scored on a wild play as freshman
Alicia Cunic grounded into a fielders choice and the URI infielders threw the ball from base-to-base, allowing Andreani to score from first.
The Rams, which had just two runners reach second on Travis yesterday, had a leadoff triple by Kristin Havdoglas and an RBI double by freshman Nicole Haywood, scoring two unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The Rams picked up two more runs in the second inning as Havdoglous tripled again, scoring Cheryl Barnes, who had walked. Mel Gregory then singled her home, giving Rack a 4-1 lead.
Andreani singled in the fourth, for her second hit of the day to start things off for SJU. Cunic then doubled her home to cut the deficit to two runs.
In the sixth, Andreani was hit by a pitch to lead things off. After Cunic flied out, sophomore
Lindsey McNamara doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. Rack got senior
Missy Rhoades to pop up bringing up McGhie.
An unlikely heroine, the Hawk third baseman had just one homer and 11 RBI on the season coming into the at-bat. McGhie crushed a Rack fastball well over the left centerfield fence, giving SJU a 5-4 lead.
Travis then retired the Rams in order in the sixth, and walked both Havdoglous and Rack (intentionally) in the seventh before getting the dangerous Gabby Zagami to pop up to
Kristin Nau at short to send the game.
For Travis, it was her 19th win of the season, tying Janielle Hoffman for the SJU single season record. It is her third school record of the season, as she also holds the strikeout record (175 and counting) and is tied with Bonnie Gasior for the shutout mark with nine.
Travis allowed just five hits while striking out nine. She is now 19-8 on the season with a 1.37 ERA.
Rack (18-11) lost for the first time in nine starts.
