HOOTIE HELPS HAWKS SURVIVE RHODE ISLAND IN OVERTIME, 71-68

KINGSTON, RI (01/24/02) - Reserve guard Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, all in the second half and overtime, to help Saint Joseph's (15-3, 6-1 A-10) survive a feisty Rhode Island squad (10-7, 4-3 A-10), 71-68, in overtime. The victory was the eleventh straight by SJU over the Rams and gave them a win in their final visit to URI's fabled Keaney Gymnasium. SJU's most exhilirating game of the year, the contest bounced back-and-forth with the contest having 10 ties and 14 lead changes. The victory was perhaps more improbable for the Hawks, as senior Susan Moran fouled out of the game with 4:33 left in regulation and the team down by a point, 55-54. After Moran left the contest, URI connected on a free throw and a layup to take its biggest lead of the contes, 58-54. A three-point basket by Amra Mehmedic and a layup by Stephanie Graff on the ensuing two possessions put SJU back on top by a point. With the game knotted in the final minute, 59-59, Graff put back an offensive rebound, after a miss by Amy Snell and the Hawks led by a pair. The Rams, however, tied the game and forced overtime when Denise King put in her own miss with six seconds left. Jane Meade's desperation heave fell short. In the extra time, the Rams went up by two points early, but a three-pointer by Mehmedic and back-to-back jumpers by Meade, who scored six first half points, but was shut out in the second half, kept the Hawks on top. A layup by Mohan gave SJU space with 1:08 left and Irina Krasnoshiok iced the contest with a late free throw. With Moran saddled with foul trouble, Mohan gave SJU a lift when it needed one in the second half. After URI had finally edged back on top, Mohan hit on several key baskets in the post that helped to keep the Rams from establishing momentum. Mohan finished the contest a perfect 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from the line. After trailing the game early, SJU slowly crept out to an eight-point lead in the first half. The Hawks led at intermission by five points, 31-26. In addition to Mohan's career-high, four other Hawks finished in double figures. Moran, who again struggled from the field (4-12), led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds, but was limited to just 22 minutes. She also collected the 800th rebound of her career. Graff added 12 points and eight boards before fouling out in overtime. Mehmedic added twelve as well. Meade finished with 10 points and five assists. Rhode Island was led by a game-high 20 points from junior Hilary Goodrich. Senior Yatar Kuyateh scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. SJU returns home on Sunday for a critical A-10 East showdown with Temple at the Fieldhouse. The winner will likely maintain sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division. That game will be televised locally on CN-8.
