HAWK BATS SILENCED AT MARYLAND

BOXSCORE GAME 2 COLLEGE PARK, MD (4/8/04) -- The Hawks received strong outings in the circle from senior Dana Travis and freshman Lauren Hughes, but managed only nine hits in losing both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Maryland (20-14). The two hurlers combined to allow only two earned runs in 12 innings but were saddled with the hard-luck losses as SJU drops to 9-17. In the opener, St. Joe's got on the board first in the top of the third. Freshman Rachel Pawlikowski laced a double and advanced to third on a sophomore Katie McCann single, who advanced to second on the throw. Junior Megan Richardson singled home Pawlikowski to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Terps answered back in the bottom half of the frame. Natalie Grossman singled and moved to second on a sacrific bunt by Rachel Greyson. A single put runners on the corners with one out for Crystal Tweedy. She laid down a bunt that was mishandled, leading to two unearned runs on the play. Another bunt by Keri Lounge plated Tweedy to give Maryland a 3-1 lead. UM tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to make a winner of Jessica Aditays (8-7). She fired all seven innings, striking out six, for the victory. Travis drops to 6-6 on the year, despite allowing just one earned run and striking out four. Hughes again tossed a strong game but again didn't receive any support in dropping to 2-7 on the year. The rookie tossed six innings, scattering six hits and walking none, and allowed a single earned run. Maryland scored single runs in the first and third innings. Hughes retired the first two batters, but back-to-back singles and an outfield error led to a run for the hosts. Monica Cypert doubled home Tweedy in the third to account for the game's final run. The Hawks threatened in the fouth as sophomore Jill Clementi led off the inning with a double. Cunic singled and advanced to second on the throw, giving SJU second and third with one out. But two strikeouts killed the rally. St. Joe's returns to conference action with a visit to St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
