GRAFF HELPS HAWKS CRUISE PAST PENN IN BIG FIVE OPENER

PHILADELPHIA (12/04/01) - A double-double by sophomore Stephanie Graff, including a career-high 23 points, helped the Saint Joseph's University women's basketball team roll over Pennsylvania, 81-57, at the Palestra. The win improved SJU's overall record to 4-2, 1-0 in the Big Five. It also extended the team's winning streak to 13 straight in City Series competition. Penn fell to 2-5, 0-3 in the Big Five. "It was a good win for us," said Hawk head coach Cindy Anderson-Griffin. "We were able to get back on track. Steph [Graff] played well, Sue [Moran] played well. We put forth a good effort." A 16-5 run by the Hawks midway through the first half helped to break open a close game. With Graff outmuscling opposing Quakers in the post, SJU opened up the wings. Free to shoot uncontested, junior Colleen McGahan knocked down a pair of key threes during the spurt, while Graff dropped in eight points. The Hawks held an 18-point lead at halftime, 42-24. Graff netted 15 points prior to the break, one shy of her career-high and McGahan added 9 points. The Crimson and Gray were never threatened in the second half. In fact, SJU extended its advantage to as many as 28-points with 4:32 remaining. Hot-shooting by Susan Moran helped the Hawks increase their lead. Limited to just six first half points, Moran moved aggressively on the blocks in the second stanza and finished the game with 18 points. "We were really looking for a win," commented Moran. "We had more of a rhythm tonight. We played more together...We communicated better." In addition to Moran, Graff tallied a career-best 23 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double figures was sophomore Irina Krasnoshiok, who netted 14 points. Garnering her first start of the season senior Amy Snell dished out a career and SJU season-high 8 assists. Looking ahead, SJU will put its City Series winning streak on the line against Villanova at the Pavilion on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. For Snell it will be a family reunion of sorts, as her sister Mary Beth is a Wildcat assistant coach. "The seniors have never lost a Big Five game," added Anderson-Griffin about the Hawks upcoming clash. "They have a lot of pride. It'll be blood, guts and war, but we'll be ready."
