SENIORS HAVE THEIR DAY IN 6-2 WIN OVER DAYTON

EAST NORRITON, PA (04/20/02) - Saint Joseph's celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon and all four Hawk seniors had a hand in a critical 6-2 win over Dayton. The victory lifts SJU to 25-10 overall and more importantly 7-8 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Dayton falls to 15-20, 10-5 in league play. Sophomore hurler Dana Travis (14-6), who struggled with her control in the seventh inning of 5-1 loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, rebounded today with a brilliant performance in relief of starter Brandie Adams. Travis, who came in after Dayton's Tiffany Ward's leadoff triple in the third inning, held the Flyers scoreless for the remaining five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. She struck out the side in the seventh inning, and in the process broke the school record for strikeouts in a season. She now has 125, surpassing Susan Dugan's mark of 123 set in 1998. Travis may have been the Hawks' #1 star, but the team's four seniors all had their share in making their final A-10 game on East Norriton Field one to remember. After Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, touching Adams for four singles, the last an RBI shot to center by first baseman Spencer Izor, the Hawks responded with a run of their own in their first at-bat. Freshman rightfielder Cara Deldeo led off the frame with her team-leading 11th double. Senior shortstop Kristin Nau, the Hawks' all-time leader in sacrifice hits, laid down a beautiful bunt to move Deldeo to third with one out. Then senior catcher Teresa Andreani drove her home with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1. Sophomore second baseman Meagan Swisher led off the second for Dayton, and was hit by an Adams pitch. Sophomore catcher Angie Barney sacrificed her to second, then a throwing error by Adams scored Swisher. Senior Missy Rhoades, mired in a hitting slump, got her first of two hits on the day in the bottom of the second, but was stranded at second to end the inning. In the third, after the Ward triple, Travis walked Megan Koester to make it first and third with no one out. She then got the next two batters to pop up, the second, a short pop to center, was turned into a double play to end the inning on a tremendous defensive play by the sure-handed Nau at short. The Hawks took the lead in the fourth on a two-run double off the bat of another senior, leftfielder Megan Brown. Brown's hit, which would prove to be the game-winner, drove home sophomore Lindsey McNamara, who reached base on an error, and junior Desiree McGhie (walk). In the fifth, SJU picked up two ore insurance runs. Andreani drove a ball to deep center for a one-out double. Freshman Alicia Cunic drew a walk, and was subsequently pinch run for by junior Gale Treskot. After McNamara reached base via a fielder's choice, Rhoades and McGhie stroked consecutive RBI singles to put the Hawks ahead 5-2. Deldeo, one of the two Hawk fleet-footed freshman outfielders, created another run in the sixth. First, she was hit by a pitch with one out. Then, she reached second on a delayed steal, her eighth of the season. Nau then grounded to third for the second out, but Deldeo moved to third after the throw, and scored on a wild throw by Izor. Travis then mowed down the Flyers two-three-four hitters in the order to close out the game and capture the record. Sophomore Dana Campbell, who pitched every inning for Dayton in the series, dropped to 12-8 with the loss. The Hawks have a busy week coming up with games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, against Villanova, Maryland and Rutgers, respectively. Only the Rutgers doubleheader will be at East Norriton.
