PRINCETON, NJ (05/03/03) - Senior Desiree McGhie led an explosive Saint Joseph's offensive attach with five hits as the Hawks swept Rider, 11-0 and 7-3, in a twinbill at the Princeton Invitational. In all,SJU compiled 24 hits on the day in upping its record to 23-12 on the season.
The Hawks opened the day with a six-run first inning. The first three SJU batters, Cara Deldeo, Megan Richardson and Lindsey McNamara, all singled. Deldeo, who was 3-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and three RBI, drove in two runs later in the inning with her second single of the game, and the sixth in the frame for SJU.
SJU would string five more singles together for a five-run fourth inning. That was more than enough for starter Dana Travis, who allowed just four hits while striking out five in recording her 10th win of the season against six losses.
In the nightcap, SJU again jumped out to a 6-0 lead, tallying three runs in each of the first two innings. Junior Lindsey McNamara hit a two-run homer in the first, her first of the season and 15th of her career. In the second inning it was Alicia Cunic who delivered the big blow, a two-run double, driving in her team leading 26th RBI.
Rider scored one run in the third and then two more in the fourth on back-to-back homers by Kristin Kenevan and Kiera Fox to start the inning.
McGhie, who collected the most hits on the day for SJU, doubled to start the fifth and came around to score on a Robin Berry double.
Senior Brandie Adams picked up her eighth win (2 losses) while allowing five hits and striking out six.
SJU will take on Princeton, which clinched the Ivy League title with an 8-5 win over Brown earlier in day, tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
