AMHERST, MA (4/16/01) - The St. Joseph's
softball team went toe-to-toe with UMass on
Easter Monday afternoon, leading through 6 ˝
innings over the #25 Mnutewomen in the first
game of a doubleheader, only to let it slip away
in the final frame, 3-2. UMass used the momentum of its seventh inning
comeback to jump on the Hawks early in game two, winning by the
score of 8-2.
Sophomore
Brandie Adams (4-9) pitched another masterpiece for SJU in
the opener, only to again come up on the short end of the score. The
Hawk ace allowed just one earned run on seven hits.
The Hawks jumped out early on UMass, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of
the first. Junior shortstop
Kristin Nau singled with one out to start things
off for SJU.
Teresa Andreani singled and then advanced to second with
Nau heading to third on an error by UMass centerfielder Teri Rooney.
Lindsey McNamara then drove home a run with an RBI ground out to
second.
In the fifth, the Hawks picked up an insurance run with Heather
Chapman driving in
Megan Brown with an RBI single. Brown had led
things off with a single and reached third on an another Minutewomen
error.
UMass closed it to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Ashley Bakken singled
to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and third on a single
by Anne Perey. Andreani threw out Perey stealing second, with Bakken
scoring the first UM run on the play.
Gale Treskot ended the inning with
a solid defensive play on a liner off the bat of Emily Robustelli.

Aisha Franke came into run for Tomoguchi. Bakken laid down a
sacrifice bunt to Kristin Doris at third who threw wildly, putting runners
on first and second. Jamie Calahan then hit one to Doris, who fielded
the ball and tossed to Nau at third, but Franke was called safe at third
on a disputed call. With the bases loaded, Perey flied to left, scoring
Franke with the tying run. Robustelli then walked to load the bases with
Rooney ending the game with a single to left center over a drawn in
outfield.
UMass carried the momentum from game one into the nightcap and
jumped all over freshman pitcher
Dana Travis (8-7) for five runs on eight
hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Minutewomen scored in each of the first four
innings, tallying twice in the fourth before Travis was relieved by Doris.
Trailing 5-0, SJU got on the board in the sixth by virtue of a two-run
homer to right by Andreani, her first of the season. Nau, who doubled
with one out, scored on the play. The Minutewomen answered with three
in the bottom half of the inning, as Rooney connected on a three-run
homer off Doris.
