MORAN POWERS HAWK WOMEN OVER DUQUESNE ON FIELDTRIP DAY, 78-58

PHILADELPHIA (01/11/01) - A capacity crowd of elementary school children from throughout the Delaware Valley watched senior Susan Moran pour in a game-high 29 points and grab 8 rebounds to lead the Saint Joseph's University women's basketball team to a 78-58 win over Duquesne. The children filled Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse as part of SJU's third annual "Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse." With the victory the Hawks extended their winning streak to nine in a row and improved to 12-2 on the season, 3-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Dukes season record evened at 7-7, 2-1 in the A-10. "This was a great atmosphere," said Hawk head coach Cindy Anderson-Griffin. "I think that our kids fed off of it. We had a great start to the beginning of the game and when we needed some baskets Sue [Moran] and Colleen [McGahan] came up with some key baskets." Playing in front of the large crowd the Crimson and Gray opened the game fast and established an 11-2 lead in the games first five minutes. Moran, who scored 21 first half points, led the way with seven-points during the run, including a three-pointer from the top of the arc to open the game. Duquesne trimmed the lead back down to just six points with 13:22 remaining in the period, but would be unable to get any closer the rest of the way. The Hawks used a three-point barrage to spark an 11-0 run and SJU never looked back. Three-point baskets by McGahan, sandwiched around a Moran jumper, and a triple by sophomore Amra Mehmedic accounted for most of the damage. The run put SJU up 25-8 and the Hawks led at intermission, 45-26. "Duquesne started out in a zone and it was important for our shooters to get off," assessed Anderson-Griffin. "We needed Amra and Colleen to open things up inside and once they started to do that Sue got some open looks." The Hawk lead grew to as many as 24 points in the second stanza, but primarily hovered between 15 and 21 points throughout most of the period. SJU shot 48.2% (27-56) from the field for the game and hammered the Dukes on the boards 38-24. In addition to Moran, McGahan finished in double-figures with 11 points for the Hawks. Mehmedic added 9 and sophomore Stephanie Graff and senior Jane Meade tossed in eight points apiece. Duquesne received 20 points from sophomore Candace Futrell and ten from junior Beth Friday. It was SJU's third annual "Fieldtrip Day" extravaganza. Co-sponsored by Newspapers for Education (Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News), the theme for the day was "Academics and Athletics." WPVI-TV 6ABC personality Cecily Tynan served as the emcee, as she and Anderson-Griffin addressed the crowd about the values of being both a student and an athlete. The crowd was also treated to a pregame basketball clinic by the Hawk coaching staff. "I was thinking during the National anthem that this is what it is all about," said Moran. It is great to have those kids come in here and love it that much and support us that much, I have never been so excited to run out for the starting lineups before. The Hawks continue to delve into the heart of the Atlantic 10 schedule this weekend, when the Hawks take on St. Bonaventure on Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Fieldhouse.
