KINGSTON, RI- The St. Joseph's men's track
team captured second place at the 2001
Verizon/Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field
Championships at Rhode Island's Mackal Field
House last Saturday.
The Hawks were in the top three in 16 of the
events they competed in, en route to crowning
six champions, including two wins for senior
Karl Savage and junior
James Scott. In addition,
freshman
Andy Craycraft was chosen as the
Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.
Scott was crowned A-10 champion in both the 55 meter dash (6.41) and
200 meter dash (21.92) while Savage was crowned champion in the
3000 meter run (8:32.94) and mile run (4:13.18), his third in as many
years. Craycraft won the 800 meter run (1:53.94) while junior
Ben Koch
claimed first prize in the 5000 meter run (14:55.68). Junior Marc
Maccario added to the Hawk dominance of the sprint events by winning
the 400 meter dash (49.64) while placing third in the 200 (22.52). Brian
Rosetti rounds out the Hawk winners with a first place showing in the
1000 meter run (2:29.91).
Senior captain
Geoff Valentine claimed second in the 500 meter run
(1:05.73) while junior
Bill Hoffman took home bronze in the 5000
(15:05.82). Sophomore newcomer
Jerry Puryear enjoyed a solid outing,
placing third in the high jump (6'3 1/4"), fourth in the 500 (1:06.22), and
sixth in the long jump (20'11 1/4").
All first place finishers earn first-team all-conference honors while
second place finishers make the all-conference second team.
