HAWK SOFTBALL SWEPT BY GEORGIA STATE

BOXSCORE GAME 2 PANTHERSVILLE, GA (3/7/04)--Meghan McCoy pitched a one-hit shutout in game one and drilled a two-run homer in game two as the Georgia State University softball team defeated Saint Joseph's by scores of 1-0 and 6-1 in softball action. Game one of the doubleheader was a thriller, as Mary Kathryn Branan drove home the game winner with a single to center in the bottom of the seventh for the Lady Panthers. The Lady Panthers (5-5) had plenty of opportunities during the game, scattering seven hits off Saint Joseph's starter Dana Travis. State would load up the bases in the fourth inning on hits by Candace Jones, McCoy, and a hit batter (Sara Berzofsky). However, the runners would be left stranded on the base paths after a GSU strikeout. Then in the sixth inning, State had a chance again with runners on the corners and no one out thanks to a double by Jones and an infield hit by McCoy. But a pair of pop outs and a groundout would end the Lady Panther threat. But State would push home the winner in the seventh. Lauren Morlock would lead off the frame with a single down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt moved Morlock over, the sophomore would advance to third on a wild pitch. That would set the stage for Branan's heroics, as the freshman ripped a single to center to give State the 1-0 win. McCoy was brilliant for Georgia State, going the distance and facing just one batter over the minimum. The sophomore gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out three in the victory. Travis was nearly as good, allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings pitched and striking out four. Sophomore Alexandrea Pratt earned her first collegiate win in the second game of the twin-bill, with senior Andrea McNary coming off the bench for her first career save in a 6-1 State victory. State would threaten in the third inning thanks to a walk to Berzofsky and a double off the wall in left-center by Branan. The Lady Panthers would take advantage, with Berzofsky scoring on a passed ball and Branan coming home on a failed pickoff attempt as the catcher's throw to third went into left field. After the dust settled, State found themselves up 2-0. The Hawks (1-3) would push across a run in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on first and second, junior Robin Berry would double to left-center, bringing in senior Lindsey McNamara and drawing the visitors within a run at 2-1. After a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth State head coach Bob Heck would turn to McNary in the to protect the lead. The senior delivered, as she would give up a bunt single but then strike out two batters and induce a fly-out to left to end the threat. While McNary was in control, State gave the hurler some insurance in the bottom of the sixth. After Jones reached with a leadoff walk, McCoy would drill a two-run shot over the fence in right-center to put the Lady Panthers up 4-1. Then with runners on second and third and two out in the inning, Berzofsky would single up the middle, driving home both runs and giving State a 6-1 lead they would not relinquish.
