BRONX, NY (5/8/04) -- Senior
Dana Travis twirled a three-hit shutout in the opener to give SJU (18-26, 8-4 A-10) a split with Fordham in the final Atlantic 10 doubleheader of the season. With today's results, Saint Joseph's wraps up the third-seed in next week's A-10 Championships and will face off with city rival Temple on Thursday, May 13 at 2 p.m.
In game one, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Saint
Joseph's loaded the bases with one out. Junior
Megan Richardson then hit a
sac fly
to center, scoring Travis who reached on a walk.The Hawks opened a 2-0 advantage in the fifth as junior
Robin Berry hit a solo
home
run to left, her first of the season.
Travis (13-10) made that lead hold up, pitching seven innings,
allowing
three hits and a walk, while striking out four. Carol Fischer (12-6) took the loss for Fordham, pitching the first four
innings, allowing one run on five hits.
In game two, the Hawks once again looked to the long ball, going up 1-0
on a
solo home run from senior
Lindsey McNamara, her fifth of the year, in the
first
inning, and then going up 2-0 on a solo home run from sophomore
Jill Clementi,
her
second of the season, in the second inning.
The Rams though rallied for three runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Erin Brooks started the inning with one out as she reached on a
throwing
error and Jaime
Giguere and Lisa Busciacco both walked to load the bases. Jamie Dautel then came through with a
two-run single through the left side to tie the game at two, scoring
Brooks
and Jones. Trish Arno then followed with the game-winning RBI-single
to
left, scoring Touris.
The Hawks threatened to tie the game in the seventh as they got runners
at
second and third with one out, but Fordham pitcher Sara Kinney got sophomore Katie
McCann
and junior
Cara Deldeo to both pop-up to second base to end the game.
Sara Kinney (16-12) got the win, pitching seven innings, allowing two
runs
on five hits, while at the plate Dautel was 2-for-2 with two RBI
and
Brooks was 2-for-3.
Freshman
Lauren Hughes (4-10) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing three runs
on
seven hits and five walks in six innings of work.
The Hawks will close the regular season with a doubleheader at Villanova on Monday at noon. SJSN will broadcast both games at VU as well as all Atlantic 10 Tournament action live on sjuhawks.com.
