HAWKS HOMER THEIR WAY TO GAME ONE WIN; DROP GAME TWO AT DREXEL

BOXSCORE GAME 2 PHILADELPHIA (4/15/04) - Saint Joseph's (12-18) pummeled Drexel in game one, crushing three homeruns and winning 8-0 after the mercy rule was invoked after five. The Dragons (14-19-2) regained its composure in game two and rallied behind steady pitching and timely hitting to win game two 3-2. SJU took advantage of a driving wind, blasting three homers before the Dragons could get off the ground. The Hawks took game one 8-0 in five innings behind a solid pitching performance by senior Dana Travis who allowed just three hits and struck out seven batters to pick up her fifth shutout of the season. Travis has allowed just one earned run in her last 26 innings pitched. The Dragons squandered a perfect scoring opportunity in the first inning. Karen Morizi ledoff by dropping a perfect bunt down the third base line. She beat out the throw from the third baseman which sailed into right field allowing the speedy freshman to take third. But Travis gathered herself to get Debbie Botke to pop up a squeeze-play bunt and strikeout Krista VanWert and Brown to end the inning. Saint Joseph's took advantage of their opportunity in the second inning when the leadoff batter, junior Alicia Cunic, got on base after being hit by a pitch and took second on a past ball. Senior Lindsey McNamara put her on third with a bunt and reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Rachel Pawlikowski hit one back at Fuller in the circle but she errantly threw it home, loading the bases. Fuller induced a hard grounder back to her but failed to turn the double-play and instead and got the force-out at home. She balked to the next batter to let a run score. A second run was plate on a Travis groundball to second and end the inning with the Hawks leading 2-0. The Crimson and Gray tried to keep the pressure on in the third inning when junior Megan Richardson launched a ball into the blustery wind that carried to the right field fence for a triple. Sophomore Jill Clementi drove a grounder into the hole at short but Botke dove and came up with the ball, throwing from her knees to gun out Richardson at home. Cuncic hit a diving liner to right and Erin McKee made a shoestring catch to get the Dragons out of the inning. The visitors put three runs on the board in the fourth and fifth innings with homers by McNamara, Clementi and Pawlikowski, taking an 8-0 lead and putting pressure on the Dragons to score to prevent the game from ending after five due to the eight-run mercy rule. McNamara finished the game 2-for-2 with a home run and RBI. Richardson added two hits for the Hawks. Saint Joseph's came out hot again in game two. The Hawks strung together a pair of hits and capitalized on a throwing error by Bridget Flynn to take an early 2-0 lead. Cunic (groundout) and McNamara (sacrific fly) both drove in runs in the inning. Drexel got both runs back in the bottom of the inning, however, compliments of Brianne Brown. Morizi again put down a bunt single, VanWert reached on a fielder's choice and Morizi slid in safe at second. Botke promptly smacked a double to right center field plating both runners and knotting the game at 2-2. The bottom of the Drexel lineup produced in the second inning. Lauren Greenberg and Stephanie Graziosi, the eight and nine hitters respectively, singled to set the plate. Morizi reached on an error when the first baseman dropped the throw from the pitcher on her bunt. Botke drew a five-pitch walk to push over the go-ahead run, giving Drexel a 3-2 lead. Saint Joseph's threatened to tie in the seventh inning when junior Cara Deldeo doubled to right. But Botke made a slick play on a ground ball to catch her off second, cutting down the lead runner. Fuller, who struggled in game one, settled down after the first inning and cruised through the Hawk lineup. She worked seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three to become the CAA's second 10-game winner, with a record of 10-5. Freshman Lauren Hughes again suffered from little run support, tossing six innings and allowing two earned runs to drop to 3-8. Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday with a crucial Atlantic 10 doubleheader with Temple at East Norriton FIeld.
