SOFTBALL SPLITS AT DAYTON, CLINCHES THIRD IN A-10

DAYTON, OH (04/26/03) - Sophomore second baseman Robin Berry drove in two runs and junior Dana Travis allowed just five hits and one unearned run as Saint Joseph's defeated host Dayton, 2-1, in eight innings to take the opener of a twinbill at Stuart Field. After a two-hour delay due to an umpiring switch, the Flyers took the nightcap on three-hit shutout by Dana Campbell, 1-0. Berry, who was 2-for-4 in the first game, opened the scoring with an RBI double to left, scoring Jill Clementi. Dayton rallied with one in the sixth as Angie Barney, who was 5-for-7 on the day, reached on an error and came around score on a double to deep left by Campbell. SJU threatened in the top of the seventh with Berry leading off the inning with a single to left. SJU pitcher Dana Travis then reached on an error by Campbell. Sophomore shortstop Cara Deldeo followed with a single up the middle, but UD centerfielder Cassie Gross nailed Berry at the plate. Campbell then got Megan Richardson to ground out to keep the game knotted at 1-1. After Dayton came up empty in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Joseph's picked up a run in the top of the eighth. Junior right fielder Lindsey McNamara was hit by pitch to lead off the frame. With one out Desiree McGhie reached on a fielder's choice and Clementi singled to left to load the bases. Berry sliced one down the leftfield line to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Travis (9-4) allowed just a two-out infield single to Barney in the bottom half of the inning to finish out the game. After a tough outing at Rutgers, she was her dominant self on the mound, allowing just five hits while striking out nine and walking one. Campbell, who hurled both games for Dayton, got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning of game two before settling down. She allowed just two hits the rest of the game, both coming in the third inning with two outs. The Flyers put two on in the bottom of the first inning on a Barney single and a walk by Cassie Gross. SJU starter Brandie Adams (7-2) also worked her way out of the jam. Adams, who allowed eight hits and struck out six in her first start in a week after undergoing a cortisone shot in her right shoulder, stranded two more Flyers in the fourth. In the bottom of the sixth, UD's Tracie Weinheimer doubled to deep center, and after Megan sacrificed her to third, Christina Vetter delivered an infield single to plate Weinheimer with the game's lone run. The Hawks, 21-10, 8-4 in Atlantic 10 play, clinched a berth in the four-team A-10 Tournament the previous day. With the win, they are tied with Temple for second place in the standings, and can finish no lower than third. The Flyers are 5-7 in the Atlantic 10, and 19-21 overall. SJU next play at Villanova on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.)
