PHILADELPHIA (1/14/03) - Trailing by a pair at halftime, 30-28, freshman Maura McBryan and junior Erin Brady sparked a second half surge by Saint Joseph's to lift the Hawks to a 70-60 victory over Pennsylvania at the Fieldhouse. McBryan scored all of her career-high 10 points after the break to help SJU to its first comeback win of the season and improved the squad to 8-6 overall, 2-1 in the Big Five. Penn dropped to 4-8, 0-4 in the City Series play.
Despite SJU maintaining a slim lead throughout most of the first half, Penn scored the final six points of the period to lead at halftime by a pair, 30-28. The Quakers then scored the first six points of the second half to push its run to 12-0 and give UP its largest lead of the game, 36-28, with 18:22 left to play.
Down by eight, SJU received a break when all-Ivy League pick Jewel Clark was whistled for her fourth personal foul with 16:54 remaining. Without Clark SJU went on a 12-2 run that Brady capped with a three-pointer to put the Hawks back on top, 42-40 at the 13 minute mark.
"We were down eight and had to make some substitutions defensively," assessed SJU head coach
Cindy Griffin. "Maura McBryan and Natasha Pronga came off the bench. It was a matter of kids that were ready to play and gave us good minutes. It was really the turning point in the game."
St. Joe's would not trail in the game again. UP kept the game close, tying the score on three occassions over the next several minutes. McBryan then sparked a 15-4 spurt by SJU with a couple of three-point plays that pushed the Hawk lead out to double digits, 61-50, and the Crimson and Gray were never threatened again.
Brady led the Hawks with 19 points, including 15 in the second half. She was joined in double figures by fellow juniors Stephanie Graff (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Irina Krasnoshiok (16 points), as well as McBryan with a career-high 10.
Clark topped the Quakers with 23 points and nine rebounds. Sophomores Katie Kilker (13 points) and Karen Habrukowich (12 points) also chipped in for Penn.
The win marked the first time all season that SJU won after trailing at halftime. It was also the Hawks' fourth straight victory.
The Crimson and Gray next take to the floor on Friday against Dayton. It will be SJU's third of four games in eight days. The contest will be played at 11:30 AM in conjunction with SJU's fourth Annual Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse.
