BOXSCORE GAME 2
PHILADELPHIA (5/1/04) -- The Saint Joseph's softball team clinched a spot in the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championships for the fourth straight season with a split at city and A-10 rival La Salle. SJU committed three costly errors en route to a 4-2 loss in game one, but responded with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap. Senior
Lindsey McNamara had three hits, including a homerun, and drove in five runs on the day.
The Hawks (17-25, 7-3 A-10) opened up an early 2-0 lead in the first on a McNamara homer to left, driving in junior
Megan Richardson, who had singled. The Explorers (10-29, 2-8) responded quickly, taking advantage of an SJU error to plate three runs off senior
Dana Travis, two of which were unearned.
La Salle added an insurance run in the second inning as an Alexis Schneider triple plated Kate Osman to give the hosts a 4-2 advantage. The Crimson and Gray were held to one Travis single over the final four innings to fall in the opener.
La Salle's Ali Wood earned the victory, scattering eight hits and striking out four.
Travis suffered the loss, throwing six innings and allowing four runs (two earned). She struck out six and added three singles at the plate.
Travis again started game two and twirled a two-hitter with six strikeouts to improve to 12-10 on the season. SJU plated a single run in the third as McNamara singled home Richardson with two away, who had bunted her way on.
McNamara delivered the big blow in the fifth as her two-run single scored Deldeo (single) and Travis (walk). Deldeo tripled in the seventh with two outs and was knocked home by a Richardson single to give SJU a 4-0 cushion.
It was the top of the order that produced for the Hawks in game two as Deldeo, Richardson and McNamara combined to bat 8-for-12 and knock in all four of SJU's runs. The rest of the lineup managed just one more hit, a junior
Robin Berry single.
