RICHMOND, VA (05/04/02) - Senior
Ben Koch was equally as brilliant in the second day of competition at the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning the 5000-meter run in a meet record time of 14:44.37 to help lead Saint Joseph's to third place at the championships held at Richmond's Sports Backers Stadium. Koch, who won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a meet record time of 9:00.16, earned A-10 Performer of the Year honors for his efforts. to lead Saint Joseph's to a fourth place tie after the first day of competiton at the 2002.
Koch was not the only star for Hawk coach
Mike Glavin on a glorious day on the track for SJU. Despite not competing in virtually any field events, the Hawks finished third with a130 points, just 7,5 points behind runner-up UMass. Rhode Island won the Championship with 182 points. La Salle finished fourth with 126.50 points , followed by Richmond (90), Fordham (66), Temple (63) and Duquesne (53).
Other winning performances for SJU included senior
Marc Maccario, who finished first in the 200 (21.93) and was part of the winning 4x400 relay with senior
Michael McCabe, sophomore
Kile Garguilo and freshman
Eric Chekemian. Sophomore
Andy Craycraft won at 800 meters in a meet and school-record time of 1:49.84, and helped the 4x800 relay team consisting of junior
Jerry Puryear, freshman Bradley Schmidt and senior
Jim Smith win gold (7:31.89).
Placing second for SJU, and garnering second team all-conference accolades was Chekemian at 400 meters; Smith at 800 meters; junior
Tim Fisher at 5000 meters; and the 4x100 team of Maccario, McCabe, Garguilo and senior
James Scott.
Also adding to the scoring column for SJU were McCabe (4th and 400 meters); Maccario (8th at 100 meters); Puryear (4th at the IM hurdles); and freshman
Tim Curran (7th at the IM hurdles).
Collin Martin, who placed seventh in the steeplechase (9:34.75) on Saturday, has qualified for the junior national meet.
SJU next competes at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Richmond.
