HAWKS SPLIT WITH DAYTON, REMAIN TIED FOR THIRD IN A-10

DAYTON, OH (4/28/01) - For most of the day the St. Joseph's softball bats were eerily quiet. A bad time for that as the Hawks were fighting for their A-10 playoff lives with the Dayton Flyers, a team they started the day tied for third in the A-10 standings with. But that all changed for the better in the top of the eighth inning of the second game, when SJU (18-20-1, 9-8 in A-10 play) strung together five straight singles to score three runs en route to a 5-2 win and a split in the doubleheader. Dayton (19-27, 9-8) had won the first game, 1-0. After being held to a single hit in the first game by Dayton ace, Ashlea Holheimer, the Hawks jumped on the board first in game two with a run in the top of the fourth. Senior Heather Chapman started things off with a single to center. Junior shortstop Kristin Nau, who was 4-for-4 on the day with an RBI, singled to left to make it first and second. Teresa Andreani the laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out. Freshman Lindsey McNamara then drove home SJU's first run of the day to make it 1-0. After Missy Rhoades went down swinging, Brandie Adams hit a shot to third, and appeared to beat the play. But the home plate umpire called Adams out, saying that UD first baseman Erin O'Shea tagged her from behind. The Flyers, helped by two hit batsmen and a Dana Travis wild pitch, tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. SJU retook the lead in the sixth as Chapman led off with a triple to right center to start the inning. Nau then singled to left to drive her home. Again the Flyers knotted the game in the bottom half of the inning. O'Shea walked to lead off the frame. Heather Campbell's sacrifice bunt skirted away from Rhoades to make it first and second. A bloop single by UD's Stephanie White just behind the first base bag made it bases loaded with no one out. Hoheimer then pinch hit and grounded to Nau at short, who cut down the runner going to third with pinch runner Lindsay Jordan scoring on the play. Travis then settled down and retired the next two batters to end the inning. After both teams went down in order in the seventh, the Hawks erupted for five hits and three runs in the eighth. Travis started the rally with a one-out single to center. Chapman followed with her third hit of the day, a single to right center. Nau's fourth single on the day loaded the bases. Andreani, hitless on the day, delivered the game-winning blow, a single to right. McNamara then picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to center. Andreani scored the final run on a wild pitch. Travis retired the final three batters to pick up her 11th win of the year. She allowed five hits while striking out two. In the opener, Hoheimer singled home rightfielder Megan Dunston (double) in the second, and then closed the door on the Hawks on the mound. The freshman hurler limited SJU to a second inning Brandie Adams while striking out six Hawks to pick up her 14th win of the season. Kristin Doris doubled to center, but missed first base which negated the hit altogether. Adams (5-11) took another tough luck loss. The SJU sophomore allowed just four hits while striking out two. The two teams finish their series tomorrow at noon.
