HAWKS WIN STREAK HALTED BY DARKNESS AFTER 11 GAMES

EASTON, PA (03/19/02) - Let there be light!! That was the wish of the Saint Joseph's University softball team in the dugout as the Hawks watched darkness end their late rally and win streak in a 6-4 loss to Lafayette in the nightcap of a twinbill. The Hawks won the opener, 7-1, to extend their win streak to 11 games prior to their first loss of the season. After taking the opener, the Hawks trailed the Leopards 5-1 heading into the sixth inning. Freshman Megan Richardson led off the frame with a bunt single. Fellow freshman Cara Deldeo then roped a double to center putting runners at second and third. Senior Teresa Andreani then hit a one-out sacrifice fly to score Richardson. Another freshman, Alicia Cunic, then singled home Deldeo to cut the deficit to 5-3. After a Lindsey McNamara walk, Missy Rhoades reached on an error, scoring Megan Brown, who pinch ran for Cunic to make it a one run game. Lafayette (1-1) picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not needed. After Robin Berry led off the top of the seventh with a single, Richardson bunted her to second. So with the Hawks' leading hitter, Deldeo, at the plate, the game was called. Fate stepped in and decided to end SJU's school record streak. The decision was justified, just untimely for the Hawks. In the opener, junior Brandie Adams picked up her fifth win without a defeat, scattering four hits and striking out six. McNamara had the big blow, a three-run homer in the third inning, her fourth of the season. Rhoades also belted her second homer of the year in the game, a solo shot following McNamara's blast, to give SJU a 6-0 lead in the game. Senior Desiree McGhie hit a lead-off homer in the third inning of the second game, her first of the season. The Hawks, 11-1, now travel to Mount St. Mary's for a twinbill on Thursday before opening their conference season at Drexel against Fordham on Saturday (noon).
