SOFTBALL SWEEPS LAFAYETTE IN HOME OPENER

EAST NORRITON, PA - (03/25/03) Saint Joseph's exploded for 11 first inning runs en route to a lopsided 18-7 visiting Lafayette in the team's home opener and then pulled out a pitcher's duel in a 2-1 victory in the nightcap of the twinbill. The Hawks pushed their win streak to four games in improving to 8-5 on the season. In the opener, SJU scored all 18 of its runs in the first two innings in taking an 18-0 lead. The Hawks pummelled the Leopard pitching staff for 19 hits with Lindsey McNamara and Robin Berry leading the way with three each. McNamara, who also had two doubles and four RBI, homered in the first inning, a two-run shot. Alicia Cunic (2-3) added a three-run blast in the second inning. She also had four RBI in the game. Sophomore Cara Deldeo, who picked up her first win against two losses on the mound, drove in three runs, two coming on a first inning triple, and scored three runs. Senior Gale Treskot was perfect in her two plate appearances, scoring twice and driving in three runs. In the nightcap, sophomore Kate Reisch (1-1) recorded her first win as a Hawk, allowing three hits and one run over four innings of work. Junior Dana Travis allowed two hits over the final three innings and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh to pick up the save. Lafayette opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as senior catcher Becky Foley led off the frame with a homer to right center. Deldeo answered in the bottom half of the third with a solo shot to straight away center to lead off the inning for SJU. McNamara then had a high fly to center drop in for a double, her third of the day. After Desiree McGhie reached base on a error, the two combined on a double steal to score what would amount to be the game-winning run. Reisch and Travis then closed the door on the Leopards to lift the Hawks to the win. The Hawks travel to Temple tomorrow (1:30 p.m.) to open Atlantic 10 Conference play with a doubleheader against the Owls.
