East Norriton, PA (4/4/01) - Heading into the
season St. Joseph's head softball coach Charlie
Wieners was hopeful that his pitching would be
solid since he expected his offense would
produce enough runs to keep his team in most
games. Little did he know that his pitching
would not only be solid, but would rank among
the nation's leaders(8th, 0.89) in earned run
average.
This proved true again on Wednesday afternoon
at East Norriton Field as the Hawks swept
visiting Mount St. Mary's, 2-1 and 4-2, to up
their record to 11-9-1 overall. It was SJU's 11th win in its last 14 games,
as the team rebounded from an 0-7 start in games played at the Rebel
Classic in Orlando, FL.
In the opening game at the Hawks' home field, senior Kristin Doris
continued her brilliance on the mound, limiting the Mount to just two hits
and one unearned run in a 2-1 win. The veteran of the SJU staff struck
out four in upping her record to 2-2 on the year. She also lowered her
ERA to 0.44, the best in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
"Experience," stated Doris on her hot start. "You get out in the field and
you know how people hit and where you have to keep the ball...just
experience."
SJU opened the scoring in the first inning as
Missy Rhoades, who
reached base via a wild pitch on the third strike, scored on a throwing
error by pitcher Allison Moraca (1-8). The Hawks tallied their other run in
the second as Gail Treskot singled and moved to second on an error by
the Mount's Erica Barone. A Doris single scored Treskot.
MSM's Nola Occhipinti, who reached base via a single, scored off a
sacrifice fly off the bat of Heather Macready. Occhipinti had moved to
third on an error by Rhoades.
Doris allowed no hits the final four innings, striking out Occhipinti to end
the game.
Freshman
Dana Travis was equally as brilliant in the nightcap, allowing
just three hits to record her team-high fifth win (four losses),
SJU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first with
Kristin Nau (3-5 on the
day, 2 RBI) starting things off with a one-out single.
Teresa Andreani
then singled to right, and advanced all the way to third as the ball went
under right fielder Kory Stanziale's legs. Nau scored on the play with
Andreani following on a wild pitch by Moraca (1-9).
An RBI single by Nau drove home Michele Wolfe in the second with the
Hawks' third run of the game.
Megan Brown, pinch-running for Jess
Ryan (walk), plated the team's fourth run in the fourth inning. Nau drove
her in with a sacrifice fly following Rhoades second hit of the game.
A two-run homer off the bat of Amanda Blizzard in the fifth made things
interesting, but Travis settled down and retired the next seven in order to
close out the game.
SJU now takes on Drexel at 3:30 PM tomorrow in a home doubleheader
at Drexel Field. The team then prepares for a A-10 series at Temple on
Saturday and Sunday, both days starting at noon.
The Mount fell to 2-15 on the year.
