2002-03 MEN'S TRACK OUTLOOK

PHILADELPHIA, PA (1024/02) -- Graduation hit the men's track team hard. Gone are all-conference performers James Scott (200m), Bill James (DMR), Jeff Storch (DMR), Marc Maccario (4x400), Mike McCabe (4x400), Ben Koch (steeplechase), and Jim Smith (4x800). Add in last year's MVP and all-conference performer in the 800, Andy Craycraft, who transferred to North Carolina, and head coach Mike Glavin loses eight stars from last year's team that placed second in the indoor and third in the outdoor Atlantic 10 Championships. "We took some knocks. We graduated some outstanding people," Glavin said. "The two best short sprinters, a really good quarter-miler, and a really good junior in Andy Craycraft. But we're already picking players to fill those spots and do the deal." Returning for the Hawks is Brian Rosetti, who as a graduate student still has one year of eligibility remaining in indoor and outdoor track. Rosetti was an all-conference performer in cross country in 2001 and is an even better performer on the oval. "In cross country, he was a good, solid runner. In track and field, he's a top runner," Glavin said of his top returnee. Rosetti led the east coast during most of the indoor season in the 1000 meters until early March and was named the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Performer after winning the mile and DMR indoors. Also returning is all-conference sprinter and hurdler Jerry Puryear, who was a member of the school record setting 4x800 relay team. The senior also competes in the high jump and long jump, as well as the 400m hurdles. He set team bests in those three events in 2002. In the sprints, Glavin will look to juniors Nick Carras and Kile Garguilio and sophomore Eric Chekemian. All three were members of the A-10 all-conference teams as members of the distance medley or 4x400 relay teams. Individually, however, they will have to step up in short events to replace Maccario, who had team best times in the 100 and 200. The transfer of Craycraft, who was a prime 400 and 800 runner, drastically affected the long sprints. Sophomore Doug Rick may step into the void left by Craycraft, as could freshman Andrew Thomas, who runs the 200, 400 and 800 events. "He's got a really nice range," Glavin said. Sophomore Collin Martin returns to lead a young middle distance group after finishing fourth in the steeplechase at the Junior Nationals. Redshirt freshman Rich Anderson is coming off an injury-plagued freshman campaign, but sports an impressive high school track record including three all-state and six all-American honors. Two more freshman, Mike DiDio of Council Rock and Joe Mohn of Connecticut's Immaculate High, ran "very fast" times in the 1600 during their prep careers and should make the adjustment to the 1500 on Hawk Hill. Indoor all-conference performer Tim Fisher leads the distance runners, after earning honors in the 5000 meters last season. Freshman Andre Laboy, from Connecticut's Danbury High School, set the state record in the 5000 during his prep career. Rich Cullin also runs the distance events, as he took fifth in the 10,000 meters at the A-10s last spring. As far as the outcome of the season, it "really depends on who comes along to cover the short end of things," Glavin said. "We're going to be okay long end and middle distance, but the loss of Craycraft kind of affects us in the center of things."
