BOXSCORE GAME 2
EAST NORRITON, PA (3/27/04) - Saint Joseph's rallied from 2-0 and 1-0 deficits in the late innings of both games during Saturday's conference opening softball doubleheader to sweep Rhode Island, 3-2 and 2-1. The Hawks also received strong outings in the circle from senior
Dana Travis and freshman
Lauren Hughes to improve to 8-14 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10.
Rhode Island (5-16, 0-2 Atlantic 10) plated single runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first, Travis retired the first two batters before allowing two walks to Gabby Zagami and Nicole Haywood. Megan Long followed with an RBI single to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. Alyssa Martino tripled home Jamie Hughes, who had singled, to add another run to the URI lead in the top of the fourth.
Saint Joseph's, who had 10 hits but left 10 runners on base, rallied in the sixth. Senior Lindsay McNamara doubled to right field to start the inning and scored on a freshman
Rachel Pawlikowski sacrifice-fly, cutting the lead to 2-1. Pawlikowski would prove to come up big again in the Hawks final at bat.
Junior
Cara Deldeo kicked off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a sophomore
Jill Clementi single. Rhode Island chose to intentionally walk McNamara, which set-up a wild play that allowed SJU to tie the score.
With the bases loaded, junior
Robin Berry grounded to shortstop Jenn Dygon, who overthrew the catcher as Deldeo slid in to tie the game. With the ball at the backstop, Clementi attempted to score from second on the play, but was thrown out at the plate. Pawlikowski then singled up the middle with two outs to score McNamara for the game-winner.
Travis tossed a complete-game to even her record at 5-5. The co-captain allowed four hits and struck out seven. Three Hawks had a pair of hits, including Clementi and juniors Lynn Ann Ravert and
Megan Richardson.
The Rams again got on the board first in the nightcap, scoring a single tally in the third. Heather Pelletier singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a botched Kim Custance sacrifice bunt. After another sacrifice bunt, Pelletier scored on a Jenn Dygon sacrifice fly.
Back-to-back singles from freshman
Cathy Richter and sophomore
Katie McCann gave SJU first and second with nobody out. After a fielder's choice erased Richter from the bases but Richardson singled to load the bases with one out.
Clementi reached base on a fielder's choice, but McCann was forced out at home on the groundball to second. McNamara came up clutch with a two-run double that put the Hawks ahead 2-1. It would be all Hughes would need in the circle.
The rookie tossed the best game of her young career, allowing only two hits and no earned runs, while striking out four.
Saint Joseph's travels on Saint Peter's on Wednesday before resuming conference play with Saturday's home doubleheader versus Massachusetts.
