BIG FIRST INNING LEADS TEMPLE TO 3-2 WIN OVER SJU

PHILADELPHIA (03/29/02) - Temple scored three first inning runs, and junior pitcher Bari Lynn Pflueger made them hold up as the Owls defeated Saint Joseph's, 3-2, in a rare road game at Temple's Erny Field. The Hawks, which tallied twice in the bottom of the third inning off a two-run blast by freshman Alicia Cunic, moved the Atlantic 10 Conference softball series to Temple's home field due to an unexpected delay in the arrival of the new fence for the Hawks' East Norriton Field. The series will conclude tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for noon. The Owls started things off right away as Katie Spencer and Katie Weigle, the first two batters of the game, each singled. Leftfielder Lynsey Grace then singled to drive in Spencer with Weigle moving to third and Grace advancing to second on the throw. Pfleuger dribbled one to first which Missy Rhoades fielded and threw home too late to get the speedy Weigle. Grace also scored on the play as the Hawks tried but failed to nail Pflueger at second. Sophomore Dana Travis (9-2) settled down after that, allowing just two more Owl hits the rest of the game. She ended up striking out five against just one walk for the day. The Hawks loaded the bases in the second on singles by Lindsey McNamara, Megan Brown and Megan Richardson. But with two out, Pflueger was able to get freshman Cara Deldeo, the Hawks' leading hitter at .473, to ground out to end the threat. Cunic, who played high school ball with Pflueger at Allentown's Parkland High, launched her third homer of the year over the right centerfield fence in the third inning, scoring senior Kristin Nau who had singled to lead off the frame. McNamara followed with a double to right. But was stranded as Rhoades and Desiree McGhie grounded out to end the inning. Pflueger retired the next 12 Hawks in order to pick up her second win of the season against nine losses. SJU falls to 16-2, 3-1 in A-10 play, on the season while Temple ups its record to 10-20, 1-3.
