PHILADELPHIA (11/03/02) -- The Saint Joseph's University softball team stepped up its fall schedule, and the demanding schedule proved dividends as the Hawks gained confidence heading into the 2003 season by posting an 11-6 record.
SJU's fall schedule was highlighted by wins over Virginia, Pittsburgh and Villanova. The team also gained a split against Lehigh, a regional power.
Junior
Lindsey McNamara led the Hawks with 13 RBI, while sharing team honors with 10 runs scored. Sophomore
Alicia Cunic topped the squad with a .410 batting average and 11 bases on balls. She also drove in eight runs, good for second on the team.
Senior co-captain
Desiree McGhie had a solid fall, placing second on the team in hitting with a .375 average, while tying Cunic for top honors with 18 hits. Sophomores
Megan Richardson (.280) and
Cara Deldeo (.271) each added 16 hits for SJU.
Deldeo also posted a 6-2 record on the mound with a team-best 1.62 ERA. Junior
Dana Travis was 5-4 with a team-high 49 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA. Senior hurler
Brandie Adams missed the entire fall season due to injury.
SJU opens its 2003 schedule at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. on March 8.
