STATE COLLEGE, PA (02/01/03) - Senior Jerry Puryear led a strong contingent of performers at this weekend's Penn State National Open. Featuring stiff competition in every event, Saint Joseph's had five IC4A qualifiers, led by Puryear's gold medal in the 500 (1:04.83).
Other strong performances were casted by freshman Andrew Thomas, who finished second in the 600m with a time of 1:20.51. Senior Brian Rosetti had a season-best and IC4A qualifiying time of 4:08.60, good for fifth in the mile run. Sophomore Doug Rick was the last IC4A individual qualifier with a time of 48.92 in the 400m.
All three relay teams met IC4A standards. The 4x400 failed to break their own school record for the second straight week, but still finished fifth in the event (3:15.55). The distance medley team of Rosetti, Rick, freshmen Joe Mohn and freshman Andre Laboy ran a season-best time of 9:59.29 to meet IC4A standards. In the 4x800, the Hawks placed ninth with a qualifying time of 7:49.23.
Senior Tim Fisher finished 28th in the 5000m with a season best time of 15:08.07.
