TOP RANKED DUKE TOO DEEP FOR SJU, DOWN HAWKS 82-48

DURHAM, NC (12/08/02) - Taking on the nation's number one ranked team Duke (7-0) , the Saint Joseph's University (2-3) women's basketball hung tough through the first half, but in the end could not match the Blue Devils overall depth, falling at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 82-48. Juniors Amra Mehmedic and Stephanie Graff each tallied 11 points for the Hawks, while Irina Krasnoshiok tallied eight points and earned all tournament honors. Coming out in a match-up zone the Hawks kept the game within single digits over the opening ten minutes. SJU, in fact, seemed to cross up Duke and had numerous wide-open looks that failed to fall in the early going as the Crimson and Gray appeared to expect contact from the Devil defense. Duke's largest first half lead was 16 points, and DU led at the break, 36-22. SJU continued to keep the game close through the first five minutes of the second stanza, when Duke's overall depth began to take its toll. All ten Blue Devils that appeared in the game played at least 16 minutes, as they shuffled in substitutions at a rapid pace. SJU, meanwhile went just seven players deep and all five starters logged 31 minutes or more. National Player of the Year candidate Alana Beard was clearly the difference-maker in the ball game, finishing with game-highs of 29 points and nine rebounds for Duke. DU outscored SJU 46-26 over the final 20 minutes. It was the sixth time in program history that SJU had taken on the nation's #1 ranked team and the second time that SJU has earned runner-up honors at the Duke Classic. The Hawks long road trip continues as the team travels to State College for a Tuesday night match-up with Penn State.
