PHILADELPHIA (1/05/02) - Junior Erin Brady scored a season-high 20 points, including a running jumper in the lane and a pair of free throws with less than :30 seconds to play in regulation, helping Saint Joseph's to a 73-68 victory over Temple at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The Owls, who lost their seventh straight game, were without the services of eight players due to a suspension for violating unspecified team rules. With the win SJU improved to 5-6 overall, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 1-1 in the Big Five. TU, meanwhile, slipped to 4-8, 0-1 A-10, 1-2 Big Five.
The Crimson and Gray built up double-digit leads in both halves, but the feisty Owls continually clawed back thanks to a breakout 26-point, five assist, four steal effort by sophomore Cynthia Jordan and a swarming defense that induced 24 SJU turnovers.
Five Hawks finished the game in double figures led by Brady's 20 points and seven assists. Irina Krasnoshiok also added 16, Amra Mehmedic tallied 11 and Stephanie Graff and Colleen McGahan netted 10 each. Graff also corralled 13 rebounds. McGahan saw her most significant action since missing the team's first eight games after having surgery to repair ligament damage in her thumb.
Leading by a dozen with 3:22 remaining, SJU appeared to have the game finally in hand. The Owls, however tallied six straight points, while SJU missed five in a row at the charity stripe to close the lead to six.
A Brady free throw and two charity tosses by junior Elizabeth Mohan pushed the lead back out to nine, 69-60. Smalls and Jordan then added a bucket apiece for Temple. Brady then iced the game with her jumper and two free throws. A late three-pointer and a free throw by Jordan made for the final margin of victory.
St. Joe's established an 11-point advantage midway through the first half, 19-8. Temple answered the challenge with a 13-3 spurt that trimmed the lead to just a single point, 22-21. The Hawks withstood the spurt, though, and went into the lockerroom at intermission ahead, 36-29.
Besides Jordan, sophomore Ari Moore had 19 points and eight rebounds for Temple and senior Stacy Smalls added 17.
The Hawks shot 60.0% from the field and 70.0% from three point range, while Temple connected at just a 40.3% clip (17.6% from three). The Owls outscored SJU 31-14 off turnovers.
SJU hits the road this week, traveling to Massachusetts for an A-10 battle with the much improved Minutewomen on Wednesday night in Amherst, Mass.
