TRAVIS TIES STRIKEOUT MARK IN 3-0 WIN OVER IVY CHAMP PRINCETON

PRINCETON, NJ (05/04/03) - Junior Dana Travis etched her name indelibly into the Saint Joseph's softball record book with her 3-0 shutout of Princeton on Sunday afternoon at the Princeton Invitational. The Hawk hurler struck out six Tigers to tie Christina Kowalski as the school's all-time strikeout queen with 372. She also moved into a tie with another all-time great, Bonnie Gasior, on the school's win list with her 43rd of her tremendous career. SJU dropped the first game of the day, also against Princeton, 7-1, to end its regular season with a 24-13 record. Travis had to work hard for her 11th win of the season, allowing nine hits to the two-time Ivy League Champions. The Tigers put runners on base in every inning, but Travis was up to the task, stranding 10. The shutout was Travis' fifth of season, and 17th of her career, placing her third in that category. Sophomore Alicia Cunic blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to provide Travis with all the run support she would need. The Hawks added an insurance run in the third inning as Katie McCann and Megan Richardson, 3-for-3 in the game, reached on singles with Desiree McGhie driving in McCann with an RBI groundout. The Hawks won despite playing without sophomore shortstop Cara Deldeo. On the mound in game one, Deldeo threw five strong innings, allowing four runs, two of which were earned, before injuring her ankle rounding third base in the top of the sixth. Deldeo, who dropped to 4-4 on the season, is day-to-day. Princeton scored twice in the first on two hits, the big blow being an RBI single by Ty Reis. After SJU cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth on a McGhie RBI single that scored Kate Reisch, who was pinch-running for Cunic who hit a two-out double to center. The Tigers came back in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs to get some breathing room. That was more than enough for freshman Erin Snyder, who allowed just four hits while striking out seven. Princeton ended the game with a three-run sixth inning as Melissa Finley greeted Brandie Adams, who came in for the injured Deldeo, with a two-run homer. The Hawks will now travel to UMass to take part in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. SJU, the three-seed, will take on second-seed Temple at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Regular season champions Umass will play four-seed Fordham, a first-time qualifier to the tournament, at noon. All SJU games will be broadcast over the internet right here on sjuhawks.com.
