SJU MOVES INTO TIE FOR FOURTH IN A-10 STANDINGS WITH 1-0 WIN OVER LA SALLE

PHILADELPHIA (04/27/02) - Saint Joseph's had to wait five days, but it finally was able to complete its three-game series against La Salle on Thursday evening at Good Shepherd Field. Sophomore Dana Travis pitched her second straight shutout, a two-hitter to lead the Hawks to a 1-0 five-inning win over the Explorers. The game was called due to extreme lightning in the top of the sixth. The win moves SJU to 30-14 on the season, and a fourth place tie with Dayton in the A-10 standings. Both teams have identical 10-8 conference marks with the Hawks owning the tie-breaker in the battle for the final spot in the 2002 A-10 Tournament to be held at Rhode Island heading into the last weekend of the regular season. The Hawks jumped out right away in the first inning on doubles by freshman Cara Deldeo and senior Teresa Andreani put the team ahead, 1-0. For Deldeo, it was her 14th double of the season, most ever by a SJU freshman and fourth best all-time on Hawk Hill. The SJU rightfielder also scored her team-leading 37th run, another SJU freshman mark. Travis, who upped her record to 17-8 on the season, allowed a one out walk to Sarah Punderson and then a double to Alexis Schneider to put runners at second and third and just one out in the second inning. Junior Desiree McGhie made a strong play on a grounder to third to get Lisa Bradley and then Travis struck out Michelle Maher to end the inning, and the Explorers only real threat of the game. The sophomore hurler struck out six in her five innings of work, and, with her 17th win, tied Christina Kowalski for the second most wins in a season by a Hawk pitcher. Her eighth shutout moves her into second on the SJU season list in that category, one behind Bonnie Gasior (1993). Andreani, who was 2-for-2 on the game, moved past Danielle Cavone (188, 1995-97) and into third place on the SJU all-time hit list with 190. She also ranks fifth all-time in career RBI with 93. The Hawks now travel to Rhode Island to face the Rams, currently in third place in the A-10 with a 11-7 league mark, for a weekend series. The winner of that series will be guaranteed a spot in the A-10 Tournament. Both teams own the tie-breaker over Dayton, and would need to be fall a game behind the Flyers, who host Temple this weekend, to fail to qualify. UMass (18-0) has clinched the top-seed while the Owls have a hold on the #2 seed.
