LABOY LEADS SJU MEN TO THIRD PLACE FINISH AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

KINGSTON, R.I. (2/21/04) - Led by sophomore Andre Laboy, who earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors in a pair of events by winning the 5000m and leading off the Distance Medley Relay, the Hawk men placed third at the 2004 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. Laboy and David Masse placed one-two in the 5,000 to highlight the Hawk individuals. Laboy covered the oval in 15:00.01 to best the field and Masse followed right behind in a time of 15:01.22. The DMR comprised of Laboy, Kile Garguilo, Chris Kessler and Mike DiDio also claimed gold. SJU received second team All-A-10 honors from Andrew Thomas (49.19) in the 400m, Chris Koneski (1:05.13) in the 500m, Brad Schmidt (2:29.50) in the 1000 and the 4x800 relay team (7:51.59) of Matt Petrocci, Rich Anderson, Schmidt and Thomas. Rhode Island claimed its third Atlantic 10 men's title behind 10 first-place finishes, including senior Colin Aina's record-tying time of 7.37 in the 55m high hurdles. URI freshman Ashhad Aagyapong was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Rookie and Bryan Skelly of La Salle was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Championship. 2003 A-10 champion La Salle finished second with 173 points, followed by Saint Joseph's (115), Richmond (84.5), Massachusetts (66), Fordham (64.5) and Temple (22).
