PHILADELPHIA, PA (03/25/01) - Freshman
Lindsey McNamara rapped six hits in as many
at-bats to lead St. Joseph's to a doubleheader
sweep of visiting St. Bonaventure, 3-1, 7-4, at La
Salle's softball field. The Hawks completed a
three-game sweep of the Bonnies (1-14, 0-3) in
their opening Atlantic 10 Conference series and
improved to 7-9 overall. It was their fifth straight
win and sixth in their last seven games after
opening the season with a 1-7 mark at the Rebel
Games in Orlando, FL.
The Bonnies struck first in the opener, as centerfielder Bernice St. Clair
launched a solo homer in the first inning. McNamara then singled in the
fourth and scored the first of her three runs on the day on an RBI single
off the bat of Lindsie O'Brien.
McNamara started the winning rally with a leadoff single to right in the
bottom of the sixth. After
Megan Brown sacrificed her to second,
Brandie Adams drove her home with an RBI single to right. O'Brien, a
walk-on catcher, then drove in her second run of the day to give the
Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Freshman
Dana Travis pitched brilliantly in evening her record at 3-3 on
the year. The Hawk hurler allowed just four hits while striking out nine
against just nine walk. Senior Heather Chapman also had a fine day at
the plate, going 2-3 with a triple.
In the nightcap, the Hawks overcame a 4-1 deficit after two innings to
pull out the win. SJU jumped out to a 1-0 lead as McNamara - who else
- singled home
Missy Rhoades who opened the bottom of the first with a
leadoff double.
Miscues opened the door for the Bonnies in their four-run second. After
a one-out single by Jessica DeLaura, the Hawks committed three
errors, the most costly being a throwing error by Adams that allowed the
final two runs to score.
Adams regrouped, however, allowing just two hits and no runs over the
final five innings to even her record at 3-3 on the year as well.
SJU chipped away at the Bonnies lead as McNamara and Rhoades
repeated their first inning performance in the third inning to cut the
margin to two runs. A solo homer to deep center by McNamara, her
third of the year, brought the Hawks to within a run, 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sandra Carroll started things off with a single.
Adams then reached base via a fielder's choice. O'Brien then pinch-hit
and drove a single to center. Senior Michele Wolfe came in to pinch run
for Adams and came in to score the tying run on a single by Rhoades.
Nau then singled home O'Brien with what would be the game-winning
run.
Teresa Andreani then drilled a triple to right, driving in two insurance
runs.
Besides McNamara's three hits, Rhoades (3-4, 2 2Bs) and Nau (2-3)
each had multi-hit games. Jessica DeLaura (2-3) and Dawn Setter (2-3)
were the hitting standouts for SBU.
The Hawks will take their hot streak to Villanova for a Tuesday
doubleheader, a makeup date for last week's rain out.
