HAWKS TAKE FIRST FROM BONNIES, 6-1

OLEAN, NY (04/14/02) - Junior Brandie Adams tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven batters to lead visiting Saint Joseph's to a 6-1 win over St. Bonaventure in an Atlantic 10 softball game on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks led 4-0 in the second game of the scheduled doubleheader, which had already been pushed back a day due to rain, before rain fell and halted play. The second game will be picked up where it was suspended, in the top of the third inning, on Monday. The two teams will then conclude the series with the third game immediately following the suspended contest. Adams, who received a cortisone injection in her right arm earlier in the week, looked back in good form. Sheno-hit the Bonnies offense, that had been averaging almost nine hits and five runs a game, over the first five innings. SBU bunched three hits off the Hawk hurler in the sixth for its only run of the game. The game was scoreless through three innings as Bonnie hurler Brianne Prince was matching Adams. Then the Hawks exploded for five in the fourth to break the game open. Senior catcher Teresa Andreani led off the inning with a single to center. Freshman Alicia Cunic sacrificed her to second for the first out. Sophomore Lindsey McNamara then singled to left, making it first and third. Senior Missy Rhoades doubled to drive in the game's first run. After Desiree McGhie popped up for the second out, freshman Robin Berry delivered a two-out single to left driving in McNamara. The Bonnie leftfielder misplayed the ball to score Rhoades with the Hawks third run with Berry advancing to second on the miscue. Freshman Megan Richardson then singled to drive in Berry, and scored on a two-base throwing error by the catcher. SJU got another in the fifth as senior Kristin Nau singled to left and advanced all the way to third on an error by the SBU leftfielder. She then scored on an RBI groundout by Andreani. The Bonnies got their lone run in the sixth off doubles by Bernice St. Clair and Tricia Hildebrand. The Hawks, 18-8, 4-6, will square off with the Bonnies, 5-10, 4-6, on Monday afternoon to complete the series.
