HAWKS SWEEP FORDHAM IN A-10 OPENER TO MOVE TO 15-1 ON SEASON

PHILADELPHIA (03/23/02) - Saint Joseph's used an explosive offensive attack led by senior Missy Rhoades' two homers to down Fordham, 13-0, in the first game of its Atlantic 10 Conference season-opening doubleheader. Sophomore Dana Travis then overpowered the Rams from the mound in the nightcap, allowing just two hits while striking out a career-high 14 batters in a 4-0 win. The sweep moved SJU to 15-1 overall, and 2-0 in A-10 play. Rhoades, who connected on her second grand slam of the season, and third and fourth homers, was 2-of-3 on the game with three runs scored and six RBI. Her output was part of an 11-hit SJU attack in the five inning contest. The Hawks started strong, scoring four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning on the bitter cold afternoon at Drexel Field. The Rams committed three errors in the inning, which led to three of the Hawks runs. After a quiet second inning, SJU picked up four more runs in the third with Lindsey McNamara driving in Teresa Andreani (single) and Alicia Cunic (double) with a double and Rhoades knocking her in with a two-run shot to left. In the fourth, SJU picked up a run on a Kristin Nau double to left that plated Cara Deldeo, who singled for her second hit of the game. Cunic then singled for her second hit and McNamara was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Rhoades. The senior first baseman then drove the ball to deep center, clearing the fence as well as the bases for SJU to make the score 13-0. Junior Brandie Adams finished her fourth shutout of the season by retiring the Rams in the fifth. Adams, who allowed just five hits while striking out four, upped her record to 7-0 on the year. In the nightcap, McNamara hit a two-run homer in a three-run Hawk first inning and that was all Travis needed in tossing her fourth shutout of the season. The sophomore hurler was brilliant from the start, and, at one point midway through the game, struck out eight of nine Rams, including five straight. She held Fordham hitless until Nicole Bilzerian singled up the middle with one out in the sixth to break up the no-hit bid. The Rams' Ivy Pollock followed with a single to left to put runners at first and second with one out. Travis then struck out the next two Rams and retired Fordham in order in the seventh for her 8th win of the season. The Hawks picked up an unearned run in the fourth when Desiree McGhie scored from second as Rams centerfielder Amy Jones misplayed a ball off the bat of Megan Richardson. The two teams will conclude the weekend series on Sunday at Drexel Field. The single game will start at noon.
