SOFTBALL SWEEPS ST. BONAVENTURE ON SENIOR DAY

EAST NORRITON, PA (04/13/03) - Saint Joseph's celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of a hot St. Bonaventure squad, 5-2, 6-2. It was two sophomores, Cara Deldeo and Alicia Cunic, who led the way for SJU, enabling the Hawks to end the Bonnies' 10-game win streak. In the opener, junior Dana Travis overcame perhaps the worst fielding day in Hawk history to pick up the win. Travis allowed six hits and two runs, none earned, in upping her record to 7-3 on the season. Deldeo opened the game by crushing a ball to deep center for a solo homer. It was the first of four hits (4 ABs) for her in the game. The Bonnies tied the contest up in the top of the second as rightfielder Lauren Krieger, who singled for the lone hit in the frame, scored on a error by Robin Berry, SJU's second miscue of the inning. SJU jumped back on top in the bottom of the third inning on Lindsey McNamara's three-run homer. McNamara, who went 2-of-4 for the game, drove in Deldeo, who doubled to start the inning and Megan Richardson, who reached base on a bunt single. The Bonnies loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning courtesy of two more Hawk errors and a Laurie Stone single. Travis then got Krieger to hit a soft grounder to her, which she tossed to Cunic at the plate for a force out. Then catcher Amanda Davey grounded to Deldeo at short to end the inning. Cunic blasted the Hawks third homerun of the game to lead off the bottom of the fifth, putting SJU ahead 5-1. The Bonnies then loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth with Sarah Altobelli reaching base courtesy of another SJU error and singles by Kim Dodson and Joelle Brunetto. Then two-time all-conference shortstop Tricia Hilderbrand popped up to Travis and Stone flied to left to end the threat. Two more SJU errors in the seventh inning allowed the Bonnies to score their final run, without a hit. All told, the normally sure-handed Hawks had seven errors in the game. In the nightcap, senior Brandie Adams made the most of her Senior Day by dominating the Bonnies on the mound. Adams allowed just three hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters. Deldeo, who went 6-of-8 on the day with three doubles and a homer, started things off again with a single in the first inning. An infield single by Richardson made it first and second with no one out. After McNamara flew out to deep center, Cunic crushed one to left for a three-run homer, her second of the day and team-high third of the season. Stone then doubled to left center in the top of the second and scored the Bonnies first run of the game on two wild pitches by Adams. Adams got herself in trouble in the sixth when she hit Hildebrand to leadoff the inning and walked Stone to put runners on first and second with none out. She then struck out third baseman Dawn Setter and got Krieger to ground out to third. Davey then singled up the middle to score Hildebrand, making it 3-2. Adams then struck out Joelle Brunetto to end the threat. The Hawks finally broke it open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits. Third baseman Jill Clementi had an RBI single scoring pinch runner Katie McCann and senior Desiree McGhie. The Hawks then loaded the bases on a Berry single, a Gale Treskot walk and an Adams single. Deldeo then hit a RBI blooper to center that dropped in only to get pinch-runner Kate Reisch thrown out at second. Richardson grounded out to end the frame. Adams then retired the side in order to end the game. SJU, 14-7, 6-2 in A-10 play, next plays Drexel at East Norriton Field on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.). The Bonnies fall to 14-10, 4-2.
